RIPS Drawstring Brief Review

Underwear Guy Review: RIPS Drawstring Brief
Designer/Manufacturer: RIPS Underwear
Website: www.rips.com
Price Point: $17.00

RIPS has recently re-launched their line after a period of relatively quiet non-activity so I thought this would be a good time to review one of their signature designs. I've had these drawstring briefs for a while so keep in mind that they represent the original RIPS line and the newer briefs may have a different fit/finish to them. These briefs are made from a very thin cotton with little to no stretch and a flat-front design. Sizing seems to be an issue here as these mediums do not fit well and I could probably go for the smalls despite normally being a medium-range size. The drawstring doesn't seem to do much to help to hold the brief in place and seems mostly decorative rather than functional. The lack of any real stretch in the fabric tends to make this brief sag and droop in an unflattering manner and could hardly be called useful for every-day wear. Overall I'd say these are more on the side of novelty underwear than functional and I wouldn't  personally recommend them compared to other briefs on the market.

The Grades:
Fit: C The loose nature of the brief results in a sagging, unflattering look and you'll feel unsupported as well given the lac of form in the front.
Design: B- The drawstring doesn't work like it should to help keep the brief up on your waist so it feels almost as though the novelty took precedence over function.
Material: C

The cotton material is too thin resulting in a "cheap" feel and it's also not particularly soft to the touch.

Construction: A

No bad seams or loose threads, so quality is good.

Overall Grade: C+

Would I buy another pair? No, one is enough just for kicks but these are going to the bottom of the underwear drawer for me.

You're absolutely right, my feelings exactly! After trying on a pair of these, I felt like I could make a better brief myself given an old bed sheet, a needle, and some thread. I threw my pair in the rag bag for the next time when I change oil in the car or clean the windshield.

Hey Mark, it is good to hear that I am not the only who uses old or ill-fitting underwear for dirty jobs requiring a piece of old rag that can be disposed after use. Just from the look of the RIPS brief, I would never be buying it. Some underwear you can just tell by looking that they could never be comfortable no matter the novelty (of drawstrings in this case). You could get more support using your bed sheet only without needle and thread, and wrapping that sheet like Japanese men do when they wear their fondushi traditional underwear.

In my last comment, I "ripped" the Rips Drawstring Brief and it was nothing more than my true opinion. In all fairness and respect though, Rips makes a great "Y"-back thong (I believe they call it a jock though). I prefer the Rips "Y"-back thong (or jock) over the 2xist and find that I can wear one size smaller than my normal size of "medium" without it being too snug.
