Play Underwear Long John Review

Underwear Guy Review: Play Underwear Long John
Designer/Manufacturer: Play Underwear
Website:www.playunderwear.com / www.intimo.com
Price: $29.00

Play underwear has an interesting background in that it was a new brand created by Intimo to help the company sell a new line of underwear that did not fit into its normal lineup. Play underwear has been positioned as offering a mainstream product line that includes every-day wear boxers, boxer-briefs and briefs rather than Intimo’s typical shiny thongs, silk boxers and pajamas. Play underwear has some tie-in design cues to Apple’s iPods with their initial launch product: the iBoxer which included a special pocket for holding a portable media player. Play has subsequently branched out with a range of brightly colored stretch-cotton underwear as well as cotton mesh camouflage and dark gray/black “night” underwear. This review covers Play’s stretch cotton “Day” long john underwear in bright orange. Play underwear’s “Day” line is made of a very stretchy thin cotton material that is very comfortable with a soft feel to it. Play’s designs include a front double-layer pouch and often include a pocket to fold the briefs into although the long johns with the extra leg material do not include that specific feature. The shape and design of the pouch on the Play long john isn’t quite as good as the Unico suspensor pouch and results in a little less definition and support but overall comfort is not compromised. The contrast stitching and bright green waistband are nice design touches. Sizing is accurate with mediums fitting just right and the length working for taller guys as well. The ankle cuffs are similar to the Unico Long Johns with substantial 2” of material to help keep the leg material from riding up.

The Grades:
Fit: A Thanks to the stretch of the material the overall fit is good without feeling too tight in any area.
Design: B The cut of the pouch could be a lot better although the unique, bright colors are a major bonus and the contrast stitching and bright green waistband are nice design touches that help make these long johns very fashionable. Note that the Play underwear boxer brief and brief pouch designs seem to fit better for some reason and do not have the same issues that the long john has.
Material: A

The extreme stretch and thinness of the cotton works well to prevent these long johns from feeling too heavy or warm.

Construction: A

Good overall construction with carefully sewn seams and even pattern cuts.

Overall Grade: B+

Given that there aren’t many choices in the fashion long underwear category these are a good option although the pouch design doesn’t come close to competing with the Unico suspensor design.

Would I buy another pair? If I were shopping for more long underwear I would definitely consider the Play long johns as an option although I would probably end up going with the Unico version if color were not a deciding factor.
