After the successful review of the Covington
bikini briefs I thought I would try out another style offered by the same
manufacturer: Comfort Stretch Pouch Trunks. Covington is an exclusive brand sold by Sears
available in a broad lineup of styles and colors including bikini briefs,
briefs, trunks, boxer briefs and boxers. These trunks are available in 2-packs
of various colors using a 97% cotton and 3% spandex fabric blend. The sizing on Covington underwear
seems to be true-to-size across their lineup as these trunks fit at the
standard mediums for myself. The bikini briefs I purchased earlier were a solid
score overall so I assumed these trunks would have a good design and fit but
surprisingly I am not rating these trunks nearly as high. The design and
material cause some real problems with these trunks. Although the inclusion of
a pouch in men’s underwear is a welcome advancement, the shape and cut of the
pouch can radically alter the comfort and fit of a given undergarment. In the
case of these trunks, the double-layer material pouch is awkwardly cut with an
unusually low placement requiring the wearer to pull the brief up higher on the
waist. A flat upper panel at the join to the waistband results in a compressed
fit/feel near the top of the trunk in the pouch as well. The way the fabric is
cut around the sides of the legs and the back also creates an unusual fit that
creates a very high a rise in the back making these look like oddly styled
vintage full-cut briefs rather than trunks. Some of the comfort in wearing
these briefs is also affected by the fabric blend. Perhaps due to the thickness
of the cotton, the weave of the thread or the need for more spandex, these
briefs feel stiff when they should be soft to the touch which is a major
problem considering these are called “comfort stretch” briefs.
The Grades:
Fit:
C-
Everything just feels awkward and poorly designed on these
trunks and the fit truly suffers because of that.
Design:
B-
Some credit is due for the inclusion of a pouch in the design
and the available colors are decent but nothing too special in the design
category.
Material:
B+
This cotton blend really could be much
more comfortable with more stretch and a softer feel.
Construction:
A
Nothing wrong with the construction grade, seams are
clean with no loose threads and both briefs had equal quality.
Overall Grade:
C+
Not much that I would recommend
here especially given the many alternatives in the Trunk style category.
Although tempting at just $7 a pair, you’re not likely to want to wear these for
style or function.
Would I buy another pair? Definitely not, I will avoid any other
Covington
underwear
purchases beyond their bikini briefs considering how disappointing these trunks
were. As an alternative, I’d recommend the Jockey Life Sculptured Pouch Trunks if you are looking for an
affordable brand of pouch underwear that also fits well.
