Jockey GO Mesh Low Rise Brief Review

Underwear Guy Review: Jockey GO Mesh Low Rise Brief
Designer/Manufacturer: Jockey Underwear
Website: www.jockey.com
Price: $19.50 2-pack

I mentioned Jockey Underwear’s somewhat inconsistent performance as an underwear designer in my last review for the Jockey Sport Low Rise Brief which earned a positive score. Today’s review of these Jockey GO Mesh Low Rise briefs supports that opinion of varying consistency with a somewhat disappointing result. I actually bought these briefs a while back when the GO Mesh line was first introduced around July. The official Jockey Press Release states: “…GO Collections underwear, a new line of high-performance underwear for men with active lifestyles. Developed using technologically advanced body scanning research to ensure the garments move with a man's body, GO Collections underwear also includes unique properties that address the specific demands of men on the go.” Apparently this was an extensively researched line of underwear with the fit and wearability of the line getting particular scrutiny.

Offered in a 2-pack for just under $20 these are the Low-Rise briefs in the line which also includes a classic very full-rise brief, a very long leg boxer brief and a midway brief. You can find these in black, white, gray and gray-blue in most department stores although surprisingly not at Jockey.com online. The GO line is packaged in a plastic display package with a printed photo on the front. The sizes are accurate with the mediums working for a standard 32-34 inch waist. The waistband itself is a bit underwhelming with just the basic functions covered without any additional microfiber brushing on the interior facing for softness. I couldn’t help but notice some very rough seams on the interior of the waistband where the mesh material is attached to the elastic. I realize the mesh material in particular can be tricky to cut but it still feels like a slightly sloppy job was done here. The only major graphic design element on the GO Mesh line is an orange Jockey Logo tag sewn onto the front of the waistband.

The material is a 90% Polyester, 10% Spandex blend with two different styles of mesh employed. The front leg panels are a more open mesh that has a fair amount of stretch to it while the double-layer pouch and back are composed of a much stiffer mesh which has about ½ the stretch. Getting to the overall fit, I have to say there are several problems starting with the definition of low-rise. I would say that using even the broadest definition of low-rise these are actually full-rise briefs. I can only imagine how full the full-rise briefs would be. Also a bit odd on the fit is the pouch design which is not very well thought-out. As mentioned earlier the pouch is unfortunately composed of the much stiffer mesh material of the two types used on these briefs which results in more tightness and more flattening than necessary or desired. The pouch is also designed in such a way to push things very low and back which isn’t really very comfortable or shaping so I found these to be of limited comfort or wearability for active or even inactive all-day wear.

The Grades:

Fit: C+ Some odd choices on the material types and the pouch design mean a low score from me on the fit category.
Design: B- The concept and idea is solid and I like the underlying attempt here with the mesh material.
Material: A-

Nothing really wrong with the material although it does feel very synthetic to the touch.

Construction: B-

It’s unusual for me to have problems with the construction category but there were enough loose threads, haphazard pattern cuts and sometimes crooked stitching to warrant a lowered score.

Overall Grade: C+

The Fit and the Construction categories really damaged the final overall grade here.

Would I buy another pair? No, I was disappointed here by Jockey and these do not warrant a second chance. Clearly the inconsistency continues for this underwear brand. Here’s hoping the next Jockey underwear I review is better.

Where To Buy:

For some reason Jockey is not advertising or selling the GO Mesh line on their site but JCPenny has them (but only in B/W) here: Product Page.

I am rather fond of the low-rise version of this new style - after several washings they really are more of a low rise, and the "stiffness" you commented about has softened. I wish they were available in burgundy or dark green, but black/blue/grey rule these days.

To say that Jockey has been inconsistent in underwear design is an understatement. They may have been innovative in 1970 with Slim Guy Low Rise briefs in dozens of colors, however they lost touch with the customer and market trends.

They used to get all my money. Now they rarely do. Every time I buy one of their new products, I'm disappointed.
