Hanes Premium Mid-Rise Brief Review

Underwear Guy Review: Hanes Premium Mid-Rise Brief Review
Designer/Manufacturer: Hanes Underwear
Website: www.hanes.com
Price: $9.00

From 2Xist’s premium line of Bold underwear I am switching to the other end of the spectrum to department store brand Hanes Underwear with a review of the Hanes Premium Mid-Rise Brief. I purchased these briefs in a 3-pack from Target in white100% cotton. These are labeled as lower-rise fit although given that men’s underwear is rarely as full-rise as it used to be I’d say this style now fits as a standard rise brief (using modern underwear definitions). The waistband on these briefs is a standard 1 ¼” elastic band but it does have a nice microfiber interior face which is high-quality for this price-point. The waistband itself is not fully covered but the white cotton of the brief is extended up to just short of the top edge of the band on the outside which is purely a design choice since it doesn’t affect the function or form of the underwear. I like the choice however since it makes the brief look a little different from the standard exposed waistband styles. The other small design element on this brief is the b/w Hanes logo tag glued onto the side-front of the waistband. The wash/care label on the back was a bit haphazardly glued-on crookedly on the interior back of the waistband but luckily it’s not too large and it lays flat against the elastic so it doesn’t present any issues for comfort or friction. The mediums fit well for a 32”-34” waist so I would say you can expect these to be true-to-size. The front doesn’t have any specially designed pouch to it so you shouldn’t expect any significant shaping, these are classic-style briefs after all. The front is double-layer with a functional fly while the rest of the brief is composed of the same 100% cotton that is slightly thin but still decent quality. I think over time these briefs will loose some shape and form because the cotton is thin and doesn’t necessarily return to form after stretching but it’s not surprising at this price-point to have that happen.

The Grades:
Fit: B+ Fit is comfortable enough for all-day wear although not as great as a really good pair of C-In2 Briefs so a generally positive score without being stellar.
Design: B The waistband style and material choice is definitely a plus and the small Hanes logo adds a little design but otherwise these are very basic briefs in a time-tested format.
Material: B+

Not bad on the cotton, maybe a little thin and not likely to be in superb shape at the end of a full-day of wearing but it’s functional and wearable.

Construction: B+

There are some construction issues to note including the crooked tag placement, some errant threads and some slightly crooked stitching but overall these briefs are relatively well-made.

Overall Grade: B

I didn’t purchase these briefs because I thought they’d score a perfect A+ considering the low price-point. I would say in the end that these are actually a pretty decent pair of underwear useful for wearing when you aren’t trying to impress and just lounging around for the day.

Would I buy another pair? 3 to a package is enough for me but that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t want to buy more if you like classic briefs a lot.

Where To Buy:

I purchased mine at Target and you should be able to find these in a lot of department stores across the US including Kmart and Wal-Mart.
