Paul Frank Brief Review

Underwear Guy Review: Paul Frank Brief
Designer/Manufacturer: Paul Frank
Website: www.paulfrank.com
Price: $12.00

Paul Frank underwear has been on the market for a while but it seems that the tongue-in-cheek underwear line has made some significant broader distribution lately with many more online stores carrying their line of briefs and boxer briefs. Paul Frank underwear is often known for its ironic and humorous t-shirt style graphics and prints with a broad variety of colors and graphic available at low prices for brief and boxer-brief styles. This review covers the “Eats Meets West” brief but you can apply the same conclusions to the other Paul Frank underwear in this style since the material and cut is the same. Some stores package these briefs in a 3-pack for around $28 but you will also find them available in single-purchase options as well. I picked these up in a medium which fit well and I would say is true-to-size fitting a 32-34” waist comfortably. The cut is a full-brief style with the sides measuring a 4 ½” (including the waistband). The waistband itself is eye-catching with a gray color with black stripes and Paul Frank repeat logo along the length. The elastic is 1 ¼” tall and stretches well although the interior is basic without the brushed microfiber finish you’ll find on higher-end lines like Cin-2. The tag in the back is minimal with a small 1” wide by ½” tall fabric logo tag with wash/care instruction micro-printed on a tab. The material is listed as 96% cotton and 4% spandex which makes for a nicely stretchable and soft blend. I would compare this fabric to the Calvin Klein 365 line for its overall finish and feel. The graphics on the front right and left of the brief are silk-screened using a plastic-like ink that stretches enough that it will probably hold up decently under typical wearing and washing conditions although I imagine after several washes there will be some disintegration which is unavoidable using this printing method. The contrast piping in a dark gray help add some style to the brief and give it a classic feel with an updated modern look. The front of these briefs is basically flat with a double-layer panel and functional fly. Thanks to the stretch of the cotton material the front is still comfortable to wear but don’t expect any great shaping or lift due to the lack of any design for a pouch.

The Grades:
Fit: B+ These briefs are comfortable and great for lounging and casual wear. Although the lack of a pouch is a bit of a detractor, I would still give the fit category a solid score.
Design: A

The classic cut combined with the very richly dyed colors and fun graphics make for a unique and eye-catching look so high marks for design.

Material: A

I liked the material as it feels high-quality for a low-price and is very comfortable to wear all-day.

Construction: A

Surprisingly good construction given the price-point with very clean material cutting and straight, even stitching across the board.

Overall Grade: A-

No pouch design brings the score down a bit but the low price and fashionable styling really help bring the overall grade back up.

Would I buy another pair? Yes, these are fun and great for regular wear or lounging around and the variety of prints means it would be worth it to buy a couple more pairs.
