Undergear French Cotton Contour Brief (Bikini) Review
Underwear Guy Review: Undergear French Cotton Contour Brief (Bikini) Designer/Manufacturer: Undergear
Website: www.undergear.com
Price: $9.00

Undergear is probably one of the longest running and most successful Men’s Underwear retailer on the market. For many years they were virtually the only game “in-town” or online for that matter if you were looking for non-department store underwear. Starting around the 1980s as a business run by Hanover Direct, the International Male/Undergear mail-order catalog is still going strong after many years. The Undergear website is one of the stronger online retail offerings with professional models and an ever-broadening number of designers and labels in swimwear, underwear, athletic gear and clothing. Although Undergear’s catalog has recently been selling a lot more third-party brands they have always carried their own in-house designs and cuts including the Contour line which has been a staple of the brand for many years. The reviewed underwear is officially called a brief but I will be categorizing this review as a bikini because the cut and waistband style is more in-line with that terminology. New fabric patterns introduced in 2007 means the Contour line is now offered in some relatively “wild” prints including what I ordered: Coral Paisley as well as Army Paisley, Stripe and Kaleidoscope. The standard color range for the non-print Contour includes more colors than I care to list but you can check out the website for all the color details. The Contour brief is composed of a 100% cotton fabric that has a surprising amount of stretch despite the lack of any lycra. The pattern versions do have a slight bit of stiffness to them when they’re new due to the printing process but after a wash it’s not much of an issue. The fit on these is mostly true-to size with my standard medium size working all right for myself although I noticed that the waistband didn’t necessarily stay in place all the time and it seemed a bit loose which meant it had a tendency to slip down on my hips a bit. The waistband itself is fully covered elastic and is about ¾” tall with a 1 ¾” wide by 1” tall UnderGear label in the back with an additional tag hanging down from that piece. At the shortest measure on the side, this brief is just ¾” from the base of the waistband thus my earlier comment about these really being a bikini cut over a brief cut. The front pouch is double-layer material with the pattern visible from the inside. I was a little surprised that the pouch on this pair of briefs wasn’t all that roomy but it wasn’t uncomfortable in any way.
| The Grades: |
| Fit: | B+ | A few issues with the loose waistband and the pouch could have been a bit more comfortable with more lift to it but otherwise a decent fit. |
| Design: | A | If you like variety of color and prints then these are going to fit the bill. Sometimes a crazy pattern can be fun! |
| Material: | B |
I’d be curious to try a non-print pair of these briefs to verify the feel of the cotton without an ink print covering the surface but overall the material was good if not stellar. |
| Construction: | A |
Undergear items are typically well-made and these Contour briefs had clean seams, good trims on the fabric and no loose threads. |
| Overall Grade: | B+ |
The price is right for these briefs with $9 a pair being very reasonable for a decent if not amazing pair of underwear. I’m relatively pleased with my purchase if not completely wowed by it so a “B” level grade feels about right. |

Would I buy another pair? Yes, a couple of the other pattern prints seem like they might be fun to own. | ||
