Beginning in 2005, Artificial Flavor broke into the Men’s underwear market with a line of briefs and trunks styled in a unique combination of fabric colors and pattern-cuts. The resulting underwear had a retro-sport look to it while also clearly revealing a modern sensibility. As a side note, Artificial Flavor underwear is made in the US and is 100% sweatshop free which could be a strong selling point for some buyers. These Corporal briefs are part of the second wave of AF underwear noting a departure from previous design themes with the introduction of a military-inspired design and color palette. The Corporal underwear line is available in two cuts: brief and hipster and three colors: Olive, Brown and Navy. For the brief style the military details are provided via 3 embroidered-patch stars which are styled like ones that you might see in a military uniform. One negative about the stars is that they are stitched a little haphazardly onto the side of the brief which shows up on the stray threads on the interior side. I wouldn’t call it a major flaw or issue but I think there might have been a more clean and precise method of sewing the stars on. The main material of the brief is a soft and very stretchable 92% cotton, 8% lycra blend that is great for a range of activities. The waistband is a matte-finish microfiber with bold artificial flavor text repeated around the 1 ¼” elastic. The interior of the waistband doesn’t have any of the nicer brushed facing you’ll find on C-In2 wares for example but overall it’s comfortable. The size of these briefs fits the normal ranges and the mediums are a good fit for the standard 32”-34” range. There is a fairly large 2” wide by 1 ¼” tall wash/care tag sewn flat on the interior back of the waistband but it’s a smooth shiny materials that doesn’t interfere with wearing comfort. The front pouch includes a functional fly and is dual-layered material. The design of the pouch isn’t revolutionary but it does a good job of providing room up front and decent support. One thing I did notice while wearing these briefs was that because the material is very soft the points where the reinforced edges of the fly (exterior and interior) join the front-side seams of the pouch there is a “darting” effect of the material being pulled which isn’t ideal. | The Grades: |
| Fit: | A- | Although this brief won’t win any awards for really innovative cuts on the fit it’s still comfortable for all-day wear . | Pouch Fit |
| Design: | A- | The patch work brings something unique to the underwear field and the choice of colors is nice to have available. I think a little more detailing could have been done to strengthen up the military theme but overall I’m satisfied with the design. | |
| Material: | A | The softness and stretch afforded by the cotton lycra blend works out very well and I give high-marks for the fabric choice. The color is even and nicely saturated throughout the material. |
| Construction: | B+ | There are some issues with some haphazard material cutting where the brief attaches to the waistband and the patches could have been finished off a bit more cleanly. Thankfully the seams and overall pattern is cut well and the construction is otherwise good. |
| Overall Grade: | B+/A- | There are some shortcomings to be found in this brief but overall I’m pleased with my purchase. |
Would I buy another pair? Yes, I would definitely consider another pair given the alternate color options and the good level of comfort. |
