Undergear Flawless Mesh Squarecut Review

Underwear Guy Review: Undergear Flawless Mesh Squarecut

Although most of the time underwear is purchased for functionality in every-day wearing situations, every once in a while it’s fun to purchase specialty underwear that you know will only be worn occasionally. Undergear has been increasingly broadening their line of house-branded underwear to extend further out from the basic Contour line into more daring and unusual cuts and fabrics. This squarecut is from the flawless mesh line introduced by Undergear a few years ago and still available on their site. The original flawless mesh underwear line included a thong, brief and tanktop in a broad variety of colors including the bright pink featured here but has now been reduced to just this squarecut in 3 colors: nude, turquoise and black. An unusual choice for Undergear, the fit is not true-to-size and runs a full size small so you will definitely need to size up. I purchased this squarecut in a large and the fit works well aided by the stretch 80% nylon and 10% spandex blend mesh. With mesh materials you tend to sacrifice durability so I wouldn’t expect these to hold up too well if you wore them all-day 7 days a week but the construction quality feels solid overall. The cut of this squarecut is low rise and almost more like a brief with the legs barely extending past the base edge of the pouch at ¾”. There isn’t any elastic sewn into the design so everything is incredibly light-weight. There is enough tension in the stretch material to keep the waist in place although the legs do have a tendency to shift around a bit so don’t expect the look as displayed by the Undergear catalog model photography to stay as neatly in-place once you wear these for more than a few minutes. The waistband is really just the same material doubled over and sewn to the rest of the brief and is 1 ¼” tall with an Undergear label attached at the interior back and an oversized wash/care tag sewn underneath that is 1 ½” wide by 2” tall. I think the wash/care tag is not executed well in the sense that with a see-through mesh material the tags are going to show through and a smaller size of tag would have impacted the “look” a lot less. The front is a surprisingly well designed pouch that is dual-layer to help cover to some degree and does a good job of providing some “lift”. Since this is a very open mesh material it’s not a big surprise that you’re anatomy is going to be quite visible so you have to be daring to wear this kind of item if you’re going out to the gym for example. The back of this squarecut is single-layer and has a strategically placed center seam which I’m sure was meant to provide back definition.

The Grades:
Fit: A I actually liked the fit design very much with the pouch doing a good job of shape and support and the low-rise combined with the minimal leg length lending a daring look.
Design: A- There isn’t a lot of design in this item but since it’s called “flawless” it makes sense that they went with a simple look. The faux waistband is a neat idea and the mesh colors are fun I just wish they hadn’t gone with such a large tag in back but you can always trim it off.
Material: A

This is such a specialty item you’ll probably know what you’re getting into but just be aware this is definitely mesh material and you shouldn’t expect long-term durability. On the upside the nylon blend is comfortable and effortless to wear.

Construction: A

The construction quality on the flawless line is very good with straight seams and top-notch stitching which can be a challenge with mesh fabric.

Overall Grade: A

I was pleasantly surprised with the final score of this squarecut but everything comes together well from fit to construction so I’m going with an A. Keep in mind that this is a limited category of underwear and I don’t recommend it if you are looking for a great go-to-work or gym undergarment.

Would I buy another pair? If I’m looking for more unusual and different underwear for some special occasions then yes, I would consider another pair of the Undergear flawless mesh squarecuts.

I do like that center seam (and assume it's not uncomfortable?). I'd like to see more designs that feature that.

I like the fact that the bottom seems finally to be having its day. There's nothing that I find more delightful than a hint of coin-slot peeking up above the waist band of those precarious lowrise pants.

In that spirit I'd like to see the designers experiment a bit with some of the elements that I see featured in some of the women's underwear, such as keyholes in the rear or maybe a waist band that plunges down a bit in the back in a kind of V shape. I don't know if that would work for men's underwear or whether it might be perceived as too "effeminate" but the Rufskin Dante that you featured in a different posting seemed to be a step in that direction.
