Considering that for at least some of us in the world, a cold winter is in full swing, I thought it might be a good time to feature another longjohn product review. This longjohn is from Australian underwear brand DeeJay which has been on the market for several years selling a variety of underwear on their website in a broad mix of cuts, patterns and materials. One of DeeJay’s top selling items is the Enhancer Longjohn which is a more daring take on the traditional longjohn profile. This longjohn is composed of a cotton/lycra blend although the percentage mix was not stated on the website or the tag so I’d take a guess at about 5% spandex. The material is reasonably stretchy with a medium weight to it. You are limited to white as the only color option with sizes ranging from small to large. The fit is true-to-size with the mediums running a standard 32” - 33” although keep in mind these are meant to be very form fitting longjohns as a matter of the design and cut. The 1” waistband is accomplished as a tunnel-cord design with a stretch nylon drawstring which is surprisingly effective and works well to keep things in place and is comfortable. The leg length of these pants may initially seem a bit on the short side but the material stretches out to work fairly well for taller guys. The leg cuffs are fairly basic with a simple 1” folded-over finish on the edge. The leg seams run along the interior for a smooth look on the outside. The back of this longjohn is unusual in that it is sewn with a curved seam on the seat and a center seam which is meant to provide some contour to your backside. I can’t say how useful or functional the seam designs are over a completely smooth cut of material but they don’t impact the comfort so at the very least they provide some design elements to what would otherwise be fairly plain. While talking about the back I should mention the 1 ½” tall by 1” wide wash/care and logo tags are placed somewhat awkwardly 2 ½” down the back seam of the underwear which I can’t say is an ideal location but it’s also not problematic enough to say it’s a major issue. The front pouch of this longjohn is where most of the “enhancer” definition comes from as it is sewn with elastic around the edges which creates a pouch that lifts things up more noticeably than a traditional design. The front is single-layer material so you can expect some “showing” of your profile.
| Fit: | A | I’m actually fairly pleased with the fit. I think the enhancer definition is earned with the elasticized pouch and seam designs on the back. |
| Design: | A | Plain white generally doesn’t win an “A” grade but for the very limited longjohn category these are far from the standard cut and I think the drawstring waist is a great idea that actually works out for once. |
| Material: | B+ | I think a little thicker material with more stretch would have been ideal but this is still a reasonable cotton blend fabric so a positive score if not stellar one is earned. |
| Construction: | A- | The construction is solid with very clean stitching on all the seams although some of those seams do not match up as nicely as I would like. Since that construction minor issue doesn’t make for a problem in terms of fit I’m going with a positive score with just a small markdown. |
| Overall Grade: | A | This is definitely a limited category of underwear with just a few options for the “Fashion” side of longjohns so finding a design that tries to do something a little more interesting is a nice surprise |
Would I buy another pair? Yes, I think I could see myself buying another pair given the cold weather and the versatility that these longjohns can provide for lounging and athletic wear. |
