Every once in a while I’ll see a pair of underwear that I have a feeling won’t work out but I’m curious enough to try it out that I’ll buy it anyway. When Undergear started selling this seamless mesh squarecut (they define it a trunk but I’ll refer to it as a squarecut due to the short leg cut) I noticed it for the unusual design and construction which looked interesting and unique. I waited a while and then ended up ordering it several months later and surprisingly you can still order it years after its first introduction. Once I got the underwear in-hand I found out this was not an Undergear-label item as I originally thought but a rare men’s item from women’s activewear and lingerie label: N-Fini. N-Fini sells a variety of items for women with virtually all the garments made out of the same 90% nylon 10% spandex mesh material. The men’s item is available only in black or white and is categorized as “one size fits all” but I would say that realistically this is only going to work reasonably well for traditional size ranges of small to medium. Any larger than a North American “medium” equivalent and I think you will find the fit too tight and ultimately uncomfortable. Although advertised as seamless the design is actually composed of two pieces with the main front and back composing the bulk of the cut and a small section underneath between the legs to bridge the “gap” between the front and back. Technically there isn’t a waistband but the design has a section of material that visually does the same job at just under an inch tall. Similarly fashioned to the waistband are the leg bands which are wider at a little over an inch. When not worn the material tends to shrink back to its original shape which is just 6 ½” tall including the waistband and leg bands. Once you put the squarecut on the nylon/spandex material stretches out and you get almost 9” on the outer leg. The front has a basic section of solid material that functions as a mild pouch but for the most part the material stretches across the front in a manner that tends to flatten and make you feel squashed. As a result of the mostly flat front, the wearing experience-although not acutely uncomfortable-thanks to a high degree of stretch-is not going to earn any awards for effortless all-day wearing either.

The Grades:
Fit: D+ I’m not a big fan of seamless designs to begin with so it takes a particularly well thought-out approach to make it work as an undergarment in my opinion. Unfortunately N-Fini didn’t nail this design very well and I’m not sold based on the unflattering fit.
Design: C

I suppose the mesh “holes” look is different and maybe considered “fun” but it really didn’t work for me without something more interesting added to the overall design.

Material: C+

Something about the nylon blend in this item doesn’t feel particularly great with a finish that’s not terribly smooth or soft to the touch.

Construction: A

With a seamless design there’s not very much construction to review but the few seams that are in the design are executed well and there were no extraneous rips or flaws in the many cutouts.

Overall Grade: C-

If you can’t tell by now, this item really didn’t work out, but I’m OK with that since I went into the purchase with fairly low expectations.

Would I buy another pair? No, these aren’t work investing in any further than this one trial pair.

Where To Buy:
Although no longer mentioned on the N-Fini website, you can still purchase this item from Undergear.com: Product Page.
