Although Frank Dandy is a recent entrant in the North American men's underwear market but they have made quite a splash with their unique and fun prints for their line of underwear. Frank Dandy Underwear is a Swedish-based company offering a broad selection of under-clothes for both men and women including some shirts. For the men's line there are now 4 cuts ranging from a full boxer-brief, then trunk, then a full-cut brief and this new cut which is a low-rise brief. I tried the full-cut brief a while back when Frank Dandy underwear was new and although I liked the designs, I found the cut to be much too high on the rise of the waistband (higher than a typical brief cut would be) for my preferences. I was pleased to see this new cut introduced in the past couple of years and finally had a chance to try a pair out. This lower cut is offered in almost all of the new prints for 2007-08 so you will have a broad selection to choose from. This tropic-inspired design is called "Gallichi" and is a reddish-orange hue with abstract plant designs on the front and back. The material is a nice blend of 93% cotton and 7% spandex which has a medium-level of stretch. The graphics are digitally printed so they do not affect the finish of the fabric to any significant degree and they hold up well to stretch and movement of the material. The sizing for Frank Dandy seems to run true-to-size with these mediums working fine for the stated 30-32" waist. The waistband is a classic 1 1/4" height with woven Frank Dandy logos repeated around and a nicely texturized interior. I like how Frank Dandy kept the tag in the back to a minimum with a small 1 1/4" wide X 3/4" tall fabric square containing the logo and basic wash instructions. You will see in the detail photos of the interior-back of the waistband the small black nylon fabric piece they used to cover the seam of the waistband join which I thought was a nice and unobtrusive way of dealing with that area of the elastic. The 3/8" contrast piping elements on the legs and the sides of the pouch are a nice classic element and work well with the design. The front doesn't have much of a pouch design although there is a center seam which helps and there's enough material combined with the stretch that I didn't find it had the same fit issues as Go Softwear's low-rise brief which is a very similar cut. I would say basic rule here is that the pouch isn't extra-roomy but it's not bad and is wearable for most guys throughout the day without discomfort. The front is single-layer material although thankfully the prints help to keep things from getting too revealing. The back of this brief is full-coverage and the sides are fairly minimal reducing down to just 1 1/2" (not including the waistband).
| The Grades: |
| Fit: | A- | Some minor concerns on the front pouch but otherwise Frank Dandy managed to pull off the sometimes tricky extra-low-rise brief cut very well. |
| Design: | A | I really like the selection of patterns and colors available, and the various details-although simple-like the tone-on-tone logos on the color-coordinated waistbands are very nice. |
| Material: | A- | Maybe a little more stretch and a little more thickness would be nicer but overall I found the cotton blend to work well. |
| Construction: | A | I found the seams to be very nicely finished with very straight stitching and no loose threads. |
| Overall Grade: | A | Low rise briefs can be difficult to pull off but I think Frank Dandy did an excellent job here so I'm going with a solid A score. |
Would I buy another pair? Yes, given the positive experience here I would definitely try out some of the other prints and designs. |
