Gregg Homme Basixx G-String Review

Underwear Guy Review: Gregg Homme Basixx G-String

Gregg Homme is a long-running high-fashion Men's Underwear line based out of Canada. I have always been a fan of Gregg Homme underwear for its unique styles, materials, colors and the continuously changing nature of their lines. Gregg Homme underwear has changed a great deal over time and the recently created 3G Actualwear label is a new a sub-brand that features slightly more conservative styles while the main Gregg Homme line has started to diverge into more fetish-wear clothing with the use of pleather, mesh and revealing designs. Besides the seasonally rotating lines Gregg Homme has also added a more stable core line of underwear that does not change as frequently as the rest of the lines that includes the Basixx line. The Basixx line includes the Push Up and Mesh lines available in a variety of cuts from a full trunk down to this minimal g-string in only black or white. This review's featured item is the most minimal cut available in the Basixx line with a pouch front and 1/4" waist and back elastic strings keeping things together and on. The sizing on this string seems to run more or less true-to-size with my usual choice of medium fitting fine although the elastic for the waist and back string is fairly stretchable and the fit is slightly loose although not outside a normal range. There is a 1 1/2" wide by 1/2" tall Gregg logo tag sewn flat onto the center-front of the pouch and on the inside in the same location is a 1" wide by 1 3/4" tall paper wash/care tag. I wish the interior tag were smaller and higher-quality like a nylon fabric rather than the cheap paper which feels a little under-produced. I realize that the tag could of course be cut out by the consumer but I still feel like a little more effort could have gone into the production/design on that specific element.

The front pouch is approximately 5" across at the top and narrows to 3" at the base before narrowing completely to a point to attach to the back string at the base. Although there is very minimal coverage, Gregg Homme managed to find a way to interject quite a bit of design into this garment. There are 3 distinct fabrics used with different finishes including the shiny reflective elastic which also runs on the side edges of the pouch, mesh insert panels on the left and right sides on the front and finally the center panel material which is a very thin solid white. All the listed materials are very stretchable with the content tag listing them as 80% nylon and 20% spandex. On the reinforced elastic sewn at the sides of the center panel the thread used is a bright reddish-orange that provides a subtle hint of color. The front center panel is slightly transparent and with just a single-layer that does not leave too much to the imagination. The design of the pouch is comfortable with a seam design at the base but the seam is finished in a way that isn't as aesthetically appealing as I think it could be. The design of the pouch is decently supporting although I wouldn't say it's the most ingeniously designed in terms of lift or enhancement of your profile.

The Grades:
Fit: B I don't have a huge amount of experience with g-string underwear but this one fits decently, stays on as well as can be expected and has a workable pouch. I still feel like a bit more work on the way this underwear is cut could have been worked out for the benefit of both the pouch fit and the string waist fit so I'm going with a solid B score. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: A Even though a g-string by definition is minimal in coverage that doesn't mean the design has to be minimal as well. I was impressed with the variety of finishes and fabrics employed throughout the design which helped to make this garment feel much better than a novelty piece.
Material: A

It's a little hard to judge the materials given their limited use but overall they are soft and stretchable so I see no reason to not go with an "A".

Construction: A

With all the seams it wouldn't be surprising to see a few loose threads but they managed to construct this g-string very cleanly with straight stitches and very tightly controlled edges on all the fabric seams.

Overall Grade: B+/A-

I'm going with a somewhat generous score here given that I do see some fit issues if you attempted to wear this item for all-day or work-wear (slighlty loose) but given that this is probably more of a lounging or bedroom wear item I can say it would work well for those scenarios.

Would I buy another pair? If you are on the lookout for g-string underwear then you should check out this entry from Gregg Homme but for myself I don't need more than this one from Gregg Homme given the lack of more interesting color choices and that I don't wear g-strings very often.

I also usually wear medium, but got this g-string in a small. The sides are basically string, and have VERY good stretch, so I hoped to gain some support by downsizing. There still isn't any shaping to speak of, but just covers things neatly. I got out my measuring tape and the small pouch matches your medium, which I find interesting. The very well endowed probably will find this underwear useless, and any average joe will not stay contained when aroused. I like it overall, but, because of the lack of support, wear it only with tight jeans. That's a unique and enjoyable experience.
