Jockey Classic Low Rise Brief Review

Underwear Guy Review: Jockey Classic Low Rise Brief
Designer/Manufacturer: Jockey Underwear
Website: www.jockey.com

Price: $14.00 2-Pack

The low rise brief from Jockey was probably my first "fashion" underwear purchase. That was several years ago back when there were far fewer options for fashionable men's underwear and your choices were limited to Hanes or Fruit of the Loom multi-pack fashion underwear found in stores like K-Mart or Jockey and Calvin Klein underwear found in mall department stores like Macys. I saw these low rise briefs on sale a few months ago and thought for the sake of revisiting a classic underwear item I would try them out again to see if they had held up under the test of time. The design of the Jockey Low Rise brief has not changed much from what I can tell with an exposed 1 1 /4" elastic waistband in white with old-school Jockey text repeated around the entire waist. The interior of the waistband does seem to have been updated a bit with some microfiber texturizing to soften the feel of the material. The tag on the interior back of the waistband is 1 1/4" wide by 1" tall and thankfully sewn flat so there's no issue with irritation from the material.

These briefs are sold in even waist sizes measured not unlike pants starting at 32 and going up to 38. I found the sizing to be a little on the snug side so you may want to size up depending on the kind of fit you like. Jockey packages the low rise briefs as 2-packs with an ever-changing variety of solids, patterns and as currently shown on their website: stripes. The material of the brief is a 100% cotton which feels like a no-frills weave with some stretch but not particularly soft or impressive with a fairly thin weight to the fabric. The back of the brief is full coverage with covered elastic leg-bands and sides that narrow to 3 1/4" not including the waistband. I found the leg bands slightly on the tight side so keep that in mind if you have a slightly larger than average leg build. Speaking of tight, the front of these briefs was not very comfortable with a flat design that doesn't help accentuate anything. There is a functional y-front fly which is a classic Jockey design which is reinforced with 1/2" tone-on-tone piping. Compared to pouch brief underwear these just weren't very good as far as fit or comfort and you certainly should not expect any great lift or shaping either.

The Grades:
Fit: C Considering how far men's underwear has evolved in the last decade with specialized fabrics and pouch designs these are definitely a throwback that don't particularly flatter or feel all that great. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: B For anyone who remembers the original Jockey Y-Front this design may be a fun retro-style but otherwise there's nothing particularly special by modern standards. I do like the range of colors and patterns available which is a nice option to go beyond standard black and white.
Material: C+/B-

For a 100% cotton blend this isn't too bad but it's not the best underwear material I've tried and it's a bit on the thin side which feels a little cheap.

Construction: C-

There were a lot of rough edges in the material cuts all over the place which didn't look very nice and the stitching was crooked in quite a few areas so this is a rare case where the Construction category is unsatisfactory.

Overall Grade: C+

I realize there are probably quite a few diehard Jockey Y-Front fans out there and I understand why you might like these briefs but I think I've been spoiled by much better-designed underwear and I now have a hard time compromising fit and material despite the lower price point.

Would I buy another pair? No, two pairs of these is enough for me. I think you'd be better off spending a little more money and trying one of the more premium Jockey lines like the Seamless Waistband or 3D Innovations which are much more comfortable and not exceptionally more expensive.

This brings back memories. Even though these aren't the best briefs by today's standards, a pair of Jockey low-rise briefs were my first pair of "sexy" underwear. The first day I wore them I needed what little support they gave because I was "excited" all day wearing them.
