I reviewed the new 2008 Petit Brief from Jameswinston Co. Underwear not too long ago and now I'm following up with a review of an earlier release product line: the NEON Hipster. This item was part of the second generation of Jameswinston Co. underwear when a more brief hipster cut made sense as an addition to help diversify the lineup which was initially limited to more traditional trunk styles. The NEON hipster line stands out from the rest of Jameswinston Co. underwear for its bright color palette which contrasts against the rest of the lines which are typically more muted natural tones. As stated on the manufacturer's website you should consider that the NEON line is cut tighter than the rest of the products and I personally recommend you size up in all situations given that even after I switched up to a large these squarecuts were still form-fitting. I tend to like covered-elastic waistbands and that's what we have here with a very strong 1 1/4" elastic waistband that is fully covered in the 94% cotton 6% spandex blend material. This cotton has a nice amount of stretch in all directions and is fairly light-weight but still feels durable. On the front of the waistband is an eye-catching logo patch with the Jameswinston Co. rugged "J" and text appearing along with the NEON hipster logo. The metallic patch is sewn flat against the waistband and measures 2 3/4" wide by about 1" tall. There is another graphic patch on the exterior-back of the waistband which is made out of the same silver-metallic fabric but is a different size measuring 4" wide by 3/4" tall. Both of these patches provide a nice bit of graphic contrast to the hipster. For the standard fabric and wash/care tag, you can look to the traditional inside-back of the waistband where you'll find a nicely compact 1 1/2" wide by 1" flat-sewn section of material that includes all the necessary information. The back of this squarecut includes a unique pattern cut with a center panel that is joined by the two side-front panels. I can't say for sure the exact intent of this construction but what I will attest to is that the back does a very good job of being form-fitting without flattening out your backside as well as not creating any excess material that could cause a wedgie. The sides of this squarecut are short, measuring about 4 1/2" not including the waistband height. The legs are finished off with a 1/2" of doubled-over material which is not reinforced with elastic which I am grateful for given that I have had issues with too-tight leg-bands with other underwear lately. The front pouch is constructed in double-layer material which provides a nice amount of thickness that feels high-quality. The pouch design is definitely snug with solid support but it still allows for good shaping as well.
| The Grades: |
| Fit: | A | I would emphasize one more time that these are intended to be a bit tighter even after up-sizing so keep that in mind when purchasing. I liked the fit as it managed to keep to the concept of being brief and tight without feeling uncomfortable or restricting movement. The front pouch works well at keeping everything in place while not flattening your profile out unnecessarily. |

| Design: | A | The bright color options are fun and they contrast nicely with a clean, modern cut that is masculine. The covered waistband is a plus in my opinion and the logo patches are a nice touch that introduce some subtle design elements that don't overpower the overall look of the squarecut. | |
| Material: | A | This is a nice cotton blend that allows for a good level of stretch which is necessary in my opinion to prevent this cut from becoming uncomfortable. The weight of the material seems about right and feels strong enough to hold up to several wash/wear cycles. |
|
| Construction: | A | Very good construction seems to be a standard for Jameswinston Co. underwear as these squarecuts had clean seams and very cleanly finished edges on the fabric cuts. |
|
| Overall Grade: | A | I'm pleased with my purchase and can recommend this underwear item for anyone looking for a fun, colorful and solidly built squarecut. |
|
Would I buy another pair? Yes, I would consider picking up some of the other colors in this line given the versatility of the cut. |
