Rounding out the review coverage for Jameswinston Co. Underwear's latest releases is my take on the new S-Brief. The S-Brief complements the bikini brief style Petit-Brief (review) and the fuller-cut Neon Hipster (review) and Retro trunks. Just like the Petit Brief, the S-Brief is available in dark, subdued colors ranging from red to green and turquoise as well as gray. There are actually two fabric types available with the "Darkwood" and "Tzar" colors manufactured in a fine ribbed cotton and the other colors available in a 92% cotton 8% elastane fabric which is soft to the touch and offers a nice amount of stretch. The S-Brief is styled with an exposed 1 3/8" tall black elastic-microfiber waistband that is comfortable and smooth. The size ranges on the S-Brief are true with the mediums fitting nicely within the stated range of a 31" - 33" waist. On the inside, on the back-right of the waistband you'll find the size and wash/care information on a fabric tag that is sewn flat. The location of the interior tag is off-center from the center-back because on the outside is a Jameswinston Co. logo patch that measures 3 3/4" wide by 5/8" tall. Because of the centered patch on the back the seam for the elastic waistband is on the left hip near the other logo patch which measures 3 1/4" wide by 1 1/8" tall. Finally, there's one more patch which is on the right leg on the front which says "Venom Special Edition" and measures 1 3/8" wide by 3/8" tall. The style of this brief is a little different from a traditional brief form in that it definitely has a slight leg to it but it is still very much a low rise style with brief sides measuring 4" at the narrowest point not including the waistband. The leg-bands are doubled over and sewn flat with nicely contrasting thread which is a light silver-blue for the gray version. On the back there is a unique pattern cut with two seams bringing together the side panels and the center panel. This design seems to help keep the brief from riding up in back while also preventing any flattening of your curves which is a nice result. Turning around to the front you'll find the "Profil Panel" front pouch with is very well designed to keep things held up front and well supported. Although no pockets or slings are used I would say you can find excellent package definition in the S-Brief that is on par with the Aussiebum Wonderjock (review). The dual-layer pouch curves upwards from the base which helps provide lift and the shape of the cut along the seam is mildly anatomical to prevent any flattening. Of course your results may vary but if you are interested in a pair of underwear that gives you a noticeable lift without requiring anything special in terms of mechanics then I suggest you give these briefs a try.
| The Grades: |
| Fit: | A+ | The engineering and design of this brief is surprisingly innovative and really does a lot to enhance your profile. The freedom of movement is good with nothing feeling tight or binding in any spot. The great thing about the fit and function of this brief is that it works for a variety of activities and doesn't sacrifice comfort for enhancement. |
Pouch Fit |
| Design: | A | The variety of logos and patch designs are fun while not going overboard and the color options as well as 2 fabric types mean you'll have plenty of choose from when you want to buy these briefs. | |
| Material: | A | I liked the stretch cotton blend and can recommend it for softness and wearability through various conditions. The ribbed fabric version is also nice although I personally give the edge to the non-ribbed for being slightly softer to the touch-although both are high-quality materials that work well. |
|
| Construction: | A | Clean seams, good finishing on the edges and a symmetrical pattern cut make for excellent scores on construction. |
|
| Overall Grade: | A+ | This is one of my new favorites for underwear briefs as it finds the best balance of design and fit. |
|
Would I buy another pair? Yes, I would absolutely buy more with some other colors and try another pair in the ribbed fabric as well. |

Don't own a pair of these but when I first saw them, they reminded of some early styles of the Japan Toot Pants brand that were on the market circa 2004.
