Underwear Guy Review: Joe Snyder Bulge Boxer

Joe Snyder is a men's swimwear and underwear line based out of Mexico with a relatively long history in the garment business dating back to 1958 (according to the official website). In the current day, Joe Snyder is known for pouch underwear and swimwear in revealing cuts and plenty of color options. Since you can find Joe Snyder items at almost every major underwear retail website I thought it was overdue I tried a pair out. For my first Joe Snyder item I went with the "bulge" boxer that some sites also refer to as the "enhancement" boxer which is available in a variety of colors including white, black, blue, red, orange, pinstripe and others. Many of Joe Snyder's items are described as dual-use for swimwear or underwear. How you end up wearing this particular item is of course up to you and a lot of websites are mixed with some referring to it as underwear while others put it in the swimwear category. The material is a swim-compatible 80% nylon and 20% spandex blend although there is also a mesh version which is more obviously meant to be underwear. For myself this is a little too risque for swimwear so I'll be wearing it and judging it as underwear. The cut is defined as a "boxer" but to be honest I think it's pretty clear this is a low rise brief design so that's where I've decided to categorize this review.

Joe Snyder underwear seems to run true-to-size with the mediums I purchased working fine for the stated 31-33" waist. It probably helps on the fit that the materials is very stretchable and accommodates a good range of proportions. The waist is handled as a fully-covered 3/4" elastic band that feels comfortable and doesn't bind in any spots. On the interior-back of the waistband you'll find the relatively large logo and care tags that measure 1 1/4" wide by 1 3/4" tall. I found the tags a bit irritating due to their composition (tyvek-style paper) and size. I think a little more efficiency on the labeling of the tags would have allowed for a less noticeable design. Luckily you can always cut out the tags should they become an ongoing problem.

The back of this brief is not full coverage and you'll find quite a bit of your lower-backside showing. The center seam running down the middle certainly defines your cheeks but as a consequence you'll get a feeling similar to that of wearing a thong as the material hugs your contours so closely. There is no elastic in the leg-bands with just the main body of the material folded over and sewn flat with a 1/2" edge. The front of the brief is actually narrower than the sides measuring just 2 1/2" at the narrowest point right next to the edges of the pouch. On the right-front of the brief is a small "JS" logo in signature red and blue that measures roughly 5/8" square. The front pouch is single-layer material which is quite thin so don't be surprised if your profile is pretty clear to the observer while wearing this item. Does the pouch work as a "bulge" booster? I would say yes, the shape and definition of the pouch does add some noticeable lift making for a bigger bulge while wearing this item. The room in the pouch is relatively average although the extreme stretch of the material menas it can be accommodating if you need a little more room.

The Grades:
Fit: B+ I'm a little torn on the fit because I think everything is intentionally designed to be very form-fitting on this brief but the consequence is a wearing sensation that's something you have to adjust to. Just like you might have to get used to a thong if you've never worn one before you should definitely consider the need to try this brief out for a while before you make your final decision on how wearable it is. The abbreviated back coverage and form-fitting curves are something that I don't think everyone will appreciate so my advice is to purchase with caution. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: B+ I liked the broad range of colors available which is always nice to have as an option other the typical white or black we always see. Beyond color there isn't a heck of a lot of "design" in this garment with the JS applied logo on front composing the main visual element beyond the overall cut. I'm not sure where to cut the marks on the annoying tags so I'm going to stack that into this category since it's really a design decision that affects the comfort rather than the fit of the brief.
Material: B

As I mentioned in the review, this is too risque an item for me to consider wearing it as a swimwear but as underwear the nylon fabric is decent. I don't feel like this will necessarily breathe all that well so I would recommend it for more limited activities rather than all-day or athletic wear.

Construction: A

I found the construction on this item to be excellent with very refined seams and stitching on all the panels. There weren't any loose threads or bad fabric edges to be found on my pair of briefs.

Overall Grade: B

I like these briefs as a occasional-wear item so a solid if not stellar score. The cut is daring but that's also what makes it more fun so I would say go for it if you want to be a little more adventurous.

Would I buy another pair? Yes, I might consider another pair in a different color, although I'm not in love with them I do feel like they fill a certain niche in the men's underwear retail space.

Hi, great review. I have a few pairs of Joe Snyders in various styles. A major disadvantage is that these require to be handwashed, the white of this range discolour badly. So, if you're prepared to get scrubbing, enjoy!
Increasingly I am noticing "handwash only" or "cold wash" on underwear. I feel that at low temps that my undies will not be properly clean.
Thanks again for the great reviews and keep up the good work!

I love my Snyders! The fit is great and the feel is fabulous! I've been putting mine in the wash on "hand wash" cycle with the rest of my "better" underwear and they have been FINE! No need to hand wash anything these days! Invest in a good washing machine. If you're a connoisseur of better clothing and items like me - it will save you tons of $$$ in the long run!
