Underwear Guy Review: Rufskin "John" Softskin Jock
Designer/Manufacturer: Rufskin Denim
Website: www.rufskin.com
Price: $28.00

It's been a while since I covered any products from Rufskin. My last review was the Dante denim brief which didn't go over so well against my scoring criteria. For this review I went with a completely different style and line from Rufskin: The Softskin "John" jockstrap, are the scores any better? let's cover the details first. The softskin line from Rufskin is available in 3 different cuts including a squarecut, a bikini, and this jock. There is also a tanktop as well as a style variation of the squarecut which is trimmed in faux leopard print. The colors available include black with gray trim, gray with neon lime green trim, blue-gray with light blue trim and what I ended up purchasing, a bright neon lime green with gray trim. All the colors are very bright and evenly dyed across the stretch fabric which is a very comfortable 90% polyester and 10% spandex blend. Based on my past experience with Rufskin products, I went with a size large for this jock which is a full size up from my normal mediums. I'm glad I sized up as the 1" tall, fully-covered elastic waistband doesn't have too much stretch to it and the jock ended up fitting nicely as a large. I liked the thicker material of the waistband which is covered in the same blend as the main pouch and the back seam looks very durable with double-stitching. The leg straps that attach to the waistband are a slightly thinner elastic measuring 5/8" and are fully covered. The leg bands on this jock are attached to the waistband slightly closer to the center seam than you will find on most traditional jocks. The strap location variation is subtle and I believe mostly just a style choice. An aspect of the straps that I liked was their length which resulted in a fit that wasn't too tight so that the straps dug into your backside but also wasn't too loose as to feel unsupportive or likely to slip off.

You will notice in the detail photos that the wash/care tag is attached to the interior of the pouch rather than the back of the waistband. The tag is fairly large measuring 1 1/4" across and 2 1/4" tall and made from an unusual paper-like material. I believe you are expected to dispense with the tag fairly quickly as the paper material doesn't seem likely to last in a wash cycle and is very easy to rip off. In most cases I don't like large tags on my underwear but I like the idea that if the designer includes a large one, they make it easy to remove as is the case here. On the center-front of the waistband is a woven Rufskin logo which is sewn flat and provides a nice bit of visual detailing without going overboard. The pouch is made of single-layer material which results in very visible outlines -this isn't a jock for the shy. The pouch itself is very comfortable and sized nicely for a balance of fit and lift with shaping.

The Grades:
Fit: A I really liked the overall fit of this jock which was comfortable on the waist, legs and pouch front. The sizing runs small and I recommend a full size up. Unlike some other Rufskin garments, the pouch is surprisingly well-designed with an adequate amount of room and some nice engineering for enhancement. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: A I am a fan of covered elastic waistband so I admit to a little bias there but the range of colors is a lot of fun and the centered logo is a nice visual element.
Material: A I found this polyester spandex blend to be very comfortable with a nice amount of stretch and a very touchable finish that was very smooth and soft.
Construction: A

Everything felt very durable with this jock including good stitching on the fabric and cleanly finished edges.

Overall Grade: A This was a very positive review experience with Rufskin hitting high marks across the board.
Would I buy another pair? Yes, I would be more than happy to pick up another jock from this line as well as trying out the other cuts given the success of this item.
