Thongs can be a very polarizing underwear type for a lot of men. Some condemn them as too feminine or uncomfortable and others will defend them as the best underwear in the world. I think there's room for all types of underwear and it's best to maintain a "to each his own" mindset but there are definitely times where there is a majority group consensus and the question becomes, do you go against the majority rule, and if so, how? Although I don't have a specific survey to reference, I think we can take it as a solid assumption that most guys are not wearing thongs to work either in an office or most other types of employment environments. Although thongs for men have made some advances over the years with a broad variety available for purchase now compared to 10 years ago, they are still not nearly as common (particularly at work) as the more traditional underwear cuts e.g. boxers, boxer-briefs and briefs. There seems to be a connotation of "taboo" sexuality or inappropriateness about guys wearing thongs that persists throughout society and that of course carries over into the office where it's not uncommon for women to wear thongs but absolutely "forbidden" for men to do so. GQ's Men's Style Guy touched on this subject a few years ago and couldn't help but close with the expected derisive comment:
"...I suppose thong use might be appropriate when you’re wearing a skintight spandex pastel figure-skating jumpsuit."
About.com Men's Fashion editor Daniel Billett had this negative comment to say about men's thongs:
"Okay, who actually wears these besides strippers? Does anyone actually know a guy who owns one of these? And if you are concerned about your “panty lines,” I am concerned about you." [original article]
Unfortunately those comments are probaby not uncommon but that doesn't mean you have to always follow the crowd and there are plenty of guys who wear thongs to work including a couple of readers who wrote in.

With the "wearing" recommendation sections within my reviews I have an "Office" section where in the past it has been rare for me to endorse thongs. A couple of readers (same name, different guys) took notice:
I have been wearing thongs for 25 years now, and wonder why you seem to give low ratings to wearing thongs at the office? I wear them all the time. I know that when I bend over sometimes the outline of the back of the thong shows through my pants and 1 or two times I have seen shock on the face of an observer. I will confess that I am careful to bend over when no one is looking, but I like thong underwear and it is not worth giving them up just because someone thinks that I am a pervert. Actually, one of the secretaries who were thongs as often as I do--OK, I look at her behind when she bends over--seemed shocked when I bent over and I know that she saw the outline of my thong. She said nothing.
Being shy about letting anyone know that I wear thongs is the only drawback that I can see to wearing thongs. I think that they are as close to the perfect, all-around underwear that one can buy. They are comfortable when the proper size is worn, and I wear them for hiking, biking, and everything else.
Anyway, I wear the former Jake Taylor thongs sold by Target (probably test marketing and appeared to have sold well), which later became the Merona brand thongs that were sold at Target for a short time before they were discontinued.
The Target brand thongs were a very soft cotton and were sewn entirely--side material, crotch runner, and cod piece, from what appeared to be two pieces of the soft cotton material. They are wonderful.
Do you know of any other thong that is so made entirely of the soft cotton material? In the alternative, do you know of any person, or company that could make them for me if I sent them a pattern, or even one of my thongs to use as an example?
I think that men's thongs are here to stay and I want the most comfortable ones that I can find, which, unfortunately, Target has discontinued.
I thank you again for your website, and thank you in advance for any thoughts on finding the perfect thong. You are doing a great service.
Bill
One thing though. I see that you seldom favor wearing thongs to the office. I do wear them to the office. In fact, I seldom wear anything else but a thong. I wear them exclusively, and have done so for several years. Why not wear them to the office?
I do. I love wearing thongs. They are the best underwear that I have found. There is the lingering thought that if the outline of the thong is noticed when I bend over or sit in a chair that allows the outline to be seen that I will be considered a pervert of some sort. I still don't display them in a locker room, rather go to a commode stall to change pants. I have witnessed 2 people that I know saw the outline of the thong. They had a stunned look on their face. Still, I persist in wearing thongs. I have considered throwing all caution to the winds, but probably won't for now. But I will continue to wear thongs.
They are my favorite, and I wear them to the office and am of the feeling that once I have been discovered, so be it. I wear thongs, won't openly advertise it, but if discovered.
Once they have seen you, they have seen you. So what. Eventually someone will ask about it and I will be truthful: thongs are comfortable.
Thongs belong in the office, too.
Bill
By the way thanks to both Bills for writing in! I won't be addressing all parts of your e-mails in this entry (I'll try to work on another Reader Mail edition soon!) but as for making recommendations for thongs in the workplace my answer has two parts. Up to that point in the blog I hadn't really covered a thong that I felt worked well in an office (or general) work environment and second, I admit to some unfair personal bias against thongs at work. I have since made an effort to broaden my views and made some recent recommendations for thongs that included for the office: CK Steel Thong and the JM Skinz Thong.
As a means to help bridge the "thong gap" in coverage on the site I thought it was time for an article devoted entirely to what thongs I think are particularly well-designed and engineered to be good at work.
| Thong Do's and Don'ts |
First off I would like to state I think guys should feel free to wear whatever kind of underwear they want, especially if it makes them feel good and it's comfortable. If you want to wear a faux snakeskin teardrop g-string that's your prerogative and all power to you. In the interests of making some recommendations and thinking realistically about more conservative workplaces, I'll go by some more restrictive criteria for office thong recommendations. Let's pretend you suddenly dropped your pants in the office in front of everyone, what might be some thong decisions that would draw the least amount of scorn from the more prudish co-workers:
| Thong Feature | Maybe Not... | Ready for Work! |
| Design: In general, I would say one of the better ideas for a thong at work would be to go with the ones that have a standard waistband since you can reveal or show your waistband without necessarily giving up the goods on what exact style of underwear you are wearing. A standard waistband also tends to look more masculine and classic than a string style. |
![]() Prepared for something more hardcore than a spreadsheet?: California Muscle Hammer Thong |
![]() Classic bold logo elastic waistband on the AussieBum Cool Thong |
|
Cut: There are a broad variety of thong cuts available but in general, for the office, something with a full coverage pouch will perform well and not seem like you are trying to be overtly sexual. |
![]() Too much skin?: BodyAware Italian Soft Cup Thong |
![]() More traditional coverage from the Papi Stretch Thong. |
| Materials: Mesh, sheer, shiny or other unusual fabrics will also seem a bit too "bedroom" for the workplace so classic cotton blends, microfiber or micro modal are better picks over silk, velvet, rubber, leather etc. | ![]() Giving it all away? N2N Bodywear Sheer Pocket Sling |
![]() Cotton with a little spandex stretch in the new Gigo Craquelado featured at Wyzman.com |
| Colors: Bright colors or wild patterns will stand out in a "look at my thong!" way that may not make the most sense for a workplace. Classic white, gray and black work well although darker or more masculine colors like shades of blue and dark red and green can make a nicely understated nod to color without being overdone. | ![]() Better for the bedroom: Intimo Flashy Hearts Polyester Lame Thong |

I guess it is okay to wear thongs to work. I never had thongs until recently when a friend of mine convinced me to get some. He said he liked the feel of the string against his butt and feeling of wearing nothing but still having sufficient coverage from the codpiece. I recently bought three pairs (Unico, 2-xist and C-IN2) to try them out for the first time. They were okay. Kept adjusting the string as I was not used to underwear fitting like that. I wore them to bed and on the weekend but I have not worn them to the office as yet. There is a sort of feeling that if my pants should drop, I don't think I would want anyone to see me wearing these. It has the connotation of being the type of underwear you wear when you plan to do a strip tease or expect to draw attention to certain parts of your body. I feel more confident with full coverage on my butt around the office. I feel overexposed in a thong. When I think of the similarity between the thong and the Japanese fondushi and that that was the traditional style of Japanese underwear and that warriors wore them and the sumo wrestlers wear something looking like thongs, it puts a different spin on appreciating thongs - indeed it a very masculine style underwear. The Japanese seem very confident in their fondushi. I guess over time we will come to appreciate the thong as a piece of item that can be worn anywhere anytime and move pass the connotation that it is for strippers only.

I think thongs are perfectly fine to wear to work. I work in a very conservative office, and wearing a thong - especially my silk Undergear thong - makes me feel just a bit sexy and "outside the box" without doing anything weird. That said, I do wear all sorts of underwear to work, though I definitely keep to the same kind of guidelines Underwear Guy endorses above.

I'm a student and i wear thongs/gstrings really often. I have more than 100 pairs of thongs ranging from all different types of brands.
I like my gstrings really skimpy and sexy. My favorite ones at the moments are Joe Snyders.
There were a few times when i wore my gstrings and bend over to collect stuff from the floor or do my shoe lace, my friends or observers expressions do look stunned. They will keep on staring in curiosity.
Even a few times when i took a train sitting down and leaning forwards to play with my mobile, 3 guys sitting next to me kept on staring at my gstring and laughed among themselves. 2 of them even had a hard on and kept rubbing their privates through their pants.
Wearing a thong to work? Why not? Thongs are just like underwear that you wear underneath your pants. I strongly agree about the fact; wearing an underwear does affect your day. If i wear an underwear i like and feel COMFORTABLE with, I'll most likely be smiling throughout the day because I feel comfortable.
People look because they're curious. I've introduced a few friends of mine to wearing thongs and gstrings, ending up, they love it!
Plus, during summer, I wear nothing but thongs, gstrings and jockstraps! Guys should really try out wearing thongs! At least you know how it feels when you've worn it once!

I am now nearly 70 and have retired to Thailand. I go to the beach nearly every day and wear thongs or g-strings all the time. I bathe in them and sunbathe in them. I have no problem and many Thai people say how sexy I look (and feel), although some of their comments make me have an erection which causes major problems for me, but they just look and laugh...and whistle.

I agree that guys should where whatever they think is appropriate for the office or simply whatever they feel like wearing without feeling that there is some kind of societal expectation for what is appropriate to wear to work.
I do agree with mensunderwearguy in that work is probably not where you want to try out the new patent leather thong, but hey, if you're willing to risk it, why not?
I do wear thongs during the summer when it's hot as hell in Chicago and I want to minimize the amount of clothes I wear to work. I also like to wear them under more fitted pants to minimize the lines.

Yup, they're fine. Recent try now leaves me wearing CK, 2xist, and Papi G's exclusively for the comfort. Sounds crazy, as I never thought G's would be my staple, but they are better than square cut boxer briefs. Other brands I've tried are horrible. Too bad for those who have been turned away by choosing an uncomfortable brand. Comfort + support. Cool site MWG!

I like thongs and often wear them to the office under slimmer fitting suits, keeps the line of the trousers smoother, particularly around the butt. Ryan's comment about feeling "outside the box is one I really support, wearing a thong under a suit in a conservative meeting for example always gives me a bit of an internal smile...I say go for it.
Reply to this
Have to say i agree 100% with Ryan and Andrew re. why they wear thongs in the office
I work in a very conservative environment, so have to wear dark suit/white shirt etc and wearing a thong under a suit feels good - and is comfortable.
I have to say I am conscious of bending over at work and don't know how comfortable i would feel if someone saw it - but have noticed people staring if i bend over on a train - and one guy did comment when I once bent over in the street - to compliment me - have to admit was a bit taken aback so didn't really respond but often think i should just go for it and stop feeling self conscious in the office.
I guess i might wear a thong to work at least twice a week - and mainly wear 2 xist - and the old Calvin Klein pro stretch blue waistband, and totally agree with all of UnderwearGuy's recommendation - although i do wear more risque thongs at the weekend.
Great article - keep up the good work!

U-guy,
I believe I share the same opinion as you in regard to thongs, "to each his own". In addition, there seems to be a time and place for everything. By that I mean, I wear thongs too on occasion, but not every day. I also don't strut around in the men's locker room at the health club wearing nothing but a thong.
Now I have a question for you. Recently I purchased a few N2N Ultra Competitor swim suits (bikinis)from the N2N website because they were cheap (on clearance for $10/each) and because I like to swim for exercise at the local health club. I like N2N low-rise products; however, the back 2-tone color of this swimsuit makes it look like a thong. I had to think long and hard, "should I or shouldn't I" before I elected to purchase these. Even though I am comfortable swimming in a bikini since I am mostly in the water anyway, do you think I could be pushing the edge too much by wearing these new suits? ...Mark
Reply to this
Hi Mark,
I bought a pair of these N2N suits as well, and though I don't usually mind wearing a swim bikini/Speedo style, the back of the suit simply doesn't make me feel comfortable in this rather conservative country.

I like thongs in general just fine, but at work I tend to wear boxers or boxer briefs to give my dress slacks a little extra protection, primarily from sweat.
PS What lines do thongs make when you bend over? I thought that the whole point of thongs was no lines (not that I mind lines - I actually like them on the right guys).
Reply to this
It very much depends on the cut of the thong and thickness of any stitching.
I find that the Hom Contact String is very clearly visible under trousers when bending over. Other thongs are not visible at all.

A man should feel free to wear what ever underwear he desires without being discriminated. Lines or no lines, who cares? I wear thongs because they're comfortable and make me feel sexy.

I am a student in high school and i dont really wear thongs, actually i have never tried it! But i do change from briefs, to boxer-briefs, and boxers; and have been kind of intimidated to wear my briefs in school! so i really have no idea, should i just go for it? i was just wondering.
Reply to this
Don't be shy or intimidated....be yourself. I wear thongs, g-strings, jock strap etc all the time. Sometimes they get the whistle....and I just smile back at them.....end of problem.....
You will probably find that many of your friends also wear them. I felt the same at college the first time I wore my thong, as you did.....and was very slow and shy in changing in the gym. I got whistles, smiles and sexy comments, and just smiled at everyone. Afterwards, many of my friends said how good I looked, and 2 of them admitted they also wore them, but were careful how they changed.
The stupid part is that ALL of them changed into jock-straps to play rugby. But after the game, they all went back to their briefs or boxers, and I slipped into my thong or g-string.

I like to wear thongs and jocks in the summer. Hands down - the best thong I've worn is the "N-Hance g-string" from N2Nbodywear (listed under "tropic line" at their website). I've tried several others, including KC, Papi, CN2 and Kyle. Non of these ensconces the package as nicely as the N2N. The design of the others, especially the Papi, sometimes threatens to let the jewels slide out. I like the N2N so well that I'm going to buy a couple more after I complete these comments.

I think thong underwear for guys is alright to wear at the workplace or gym or whenever. I personally think that guys who wear them should at least be in good physical shape, well toned, and do the whole man-scaling thing. Nobody likes to see a guy over weight, hairy as a jungle cat sporting a thong. It doesn't do the style justice. I wear them and only styles that aren't too bedside or just wrong but like the comfort they allow and support they give. I think thongs will always be a head turner and a glare catcher at the gym and not in a good way but if you like'em why not? Join the good fight and try wearing them for a few days to get used to them. Leave the feminine thongs alone and tuck your pride away for a few days. But leave the thong at home when going to the beach. Board shorts are king there.

Thongs are good when you get a pair that will fit well. I've had mixed sucess with thongs I've have a few which are very comfortable Cocksox and joe snyder ones seem to be the best for me. HOM ones are also pretty good although i would recommend going a size up for them to be comfortable to wear all day. I have thongs and have worn them to work but i still wouldn't advertise the fact esp at work.

I tried wearing thongs for more than four months (not continues wearing) and when I wear a thong I wear it for 24 hours. My opinion that it gives more support than brief boxer, better in summer and needs less space to store but the friction causes some discomfort especially if you are doing exercises which would increase the friction. When I wear a thong from morning to evening I feel discomfort in specific spot of my skin because of the friction with the strap. I tried C-In2 Y-Back Thong, Clever Stretch Cotton Thong and Calvin Klein Steel Cotton. The most comfortable one is Calvin Klein Steel Cotton.

I only wear thongs nad I have been wearing thongs to work for 10 years now. My personal preference today is the CK steel and the C-in2.
Thongs are the best underwear option for my taste specially in the hot weather.

I don't understand the hang-up with wearing thong underwear to work, if it is comfortable and that's what you’re in the mood to wear then you go for it. I alternate between thongs, micro briefs and jocks.
As far as my favorite thongs; I feel HOM does the best job of building a consistently well designed, great fitting and finest quality product on the market. I also like MANstore euphory bungee string, and N2N Bodywear Logo Thong. I don't like the cut and feel of the CK steel thong, 2Xist Essentials Y-Back Thong or the AussieBum Cool Thong, there are more but I won’t bore you guys.
Bottom line is thongs are a wonderful style of underwear and are truly under appreciated by most men. You need to find the right style, fabric and size (it’s critical that it conforms to your body in every way). Society has placed restrains on men and what is considered masculine. Men need to be free to express their individually and there is no better place to start than with what’s so close to your body.
As far the best fitting thongs I feel HOM does the best job of building a consistently well designed, great fitting and excellent quality product on the market. I also like MANstore euphory bungee string, and N2N Bodywear Logo Thong. I don't like the cut of the CK steel thong, 2Xist Essentials Y-Back Thong or the AussieBum Cool Thong.

I've never actually worn a thong before, but I plan to buy them in the future. They seem very sexy and fun to wear, but I don't know if I would wear them in a situation where other people would know I was wearing them. I like wearing briefs and although it can be slightly awkward in the locker room, I've seen other guys wearing them and chose to not care what anyone thought. However, when I get to college I want to start fresh, and wear what I want, so I would wear thongs and wouldn't care what people thought of it.

Glad to read you're going to wear what makes YOU comfortable. When I started wearing thongs, I was a bit nervous about wearing them to a gym I go to where I knew I'd be undressing and have them seen. Most men there didn't seem to notice and if they did, didn't say anything. On a few different occassions while in the locker room, I did receive compliments on how nice they looked and how I looked in them. I also received several questions from a few men asking if they were comfortable to wear and if the material was soft to the touch...not stiff or scratchy. I'll never go back to briefs or boxers!

Definitely wear them if you want to - what does it matter what other people think? My wife was a bit surprised when she found out that I wore them but only because most guys don't so she wasn't expecting it.
Buy enough pairs so that you can wear them every day for a couple of weeks and you'll never wear anything else again. Thongs are sexy to wear and I instantly felt more confident when I started wearing them but they are also really comfortable and supportive when you find the right ones. I recommend the hom plume and fredy as the most comfortable so don't be put off wearing something briefer when you try thongs for the first time.

I have just started wearing thongs because my doctor recommended. Apparently they do more than briefs for helping with hemorrhoids. I have been wearing then for about 2 weeks. It took some getting use to, but now it is ok. It is just a bit embarrassing going into Victoria's Secret to buy a pair that fits. Buy the way, they really do a great job of holding the nads out of the way,

I've been wearing thongs exclusively now over ten years. They're all I wear. I find them fun and "stimulating", knowing what I have on while I interact with others keeps a smile on my face. Enjoy wearing them.

I'm in Florida. I usually only wear thongs in the summer. I can really tell the difference from the boxers or boxer briefs that I wear in winter. The designer thongs with elastic waistbands and 'Y' back style is okay. But I find just plain ole cotton thongs more comfortable. The kind that look like bikini briefs in front. I like the Joe Boxer thongs I picked up at Kmart. They feel more like regular everyday underwear. I can wear a pair all day with no problems. I got large instead of the medium I usually wear.

I recently began wearing thongs to the office. I wear a variety of thongs. I do not really feel that wearing a thong is that big of a deal. I used to wear bikini and string bikini briefs at work but i feel so much more comfortable in a thong. Thongs fit better around my package than other types of underwear. I love the Synder Bulge thong. It really helps show off my package to the women that I work with.

I wear thongs all the time work, gym, etc. Wearing a thong to work is not an issue as long as you keep it in your pants. I don't want to see anyone's thong, boxer or briefs hanging out of their pants so either way keep your underwear covered. In that case, thongs are great. They are comfortable and today there are so many styles to choose from I just say buy a couple and figure out which one fits best for you. Good luck!

OK first of all I don`t work in an office, but I do work part time as a waiter. I`m required to wear black pants, white shirt, and red bow tie. I always wear red, white, or black thongs underneath. I`m glad I`m free to choose the kind of underwear I want to wear to work. Love those thongs.

a recent convert (aged 50 ) to thongs, g strings so comfortable, cosy and feels sexy , fed up with old y fronts, why did we ever wear them in first place ? have to say bit wary of revealing then in the gym changing rooms. has anybody ever worn thongs g strings in the gym ?

Well, I'm 16 years old and I own.. three thongs. And once I get over the initial hard-on from being so revealed, they are my favorite, but I find it's a lot better after a little while. After the string fits it's self in the right place between your cheeks. Then, you're golden. I'm wearing one right now!

I like to wear thongs not only to go to the office but also to work out, to go to the beach, etc. They feel great and I love the attention I get from other people. Sometimes you just have to deal with the comments of the stupid people that are brainless, bt I guess that is part of life.

I've wanted to wear thongs, but wonder what will be thought of me if i ever do, and someone finds out. Hopefully when i get in my Uni. I'll be able to be more free. I've heard that thongs feel like a permanent wedgie. I do like CK undies, haven't really tried anything like CIN2, Jockey, etc. DO want to try Cocksox. Maybe one of these days I'll bit the bullet. This might sound fortuitous, but i do go commando sometimes.

I had been married to my wife for two years when I decided that I would like to try wearing thongs. Before then I'd only worn boxers and never mentioned wearing thongs to her, although she had said that she didn't find men in them attractive.
I bought a couple of pairs, deliberately not something too skimpy, and wore them and let her find out when the washing was done.
I expected real surprise but she hardly reacted. I bought more pairs and she said she thinks I look good in them.
I now only really wear thongs and G-strings and wish I'd started wearing them years ago as I find them so comfortable and supportive.
Wear them, you won't regret it!

I been Wearing Thongs since 2006. Am going to have to say they have to be the Best Kind of Underwear out there. I have not found a brand that I like by its self besides Mansilk... but there to easy to Rip(Do to my Martial Arts.)Finding the Right pair is somewhat hard so. I also, like the feeling of going commando without going commando. I have noting bad to say about mens Thongs...Just men who wear womens.

I have been wearing thongs for about 10years and love them. Definately more comfortable that traditional boxers or briefs. The are more supportive and much cooler. I wear them to work, gym and when I go out. I prefer the cotton one for comfort although silk are pretty comfortable too. I would recommend plain cotton ones for someone wanting to try them- then experent with others after. You can buy them discreetly on the web like UNDERGEAR.COM and other sites. I imagine you van seethe outline through my pants if I bend over, but you get over that. Never had any comments good or bad so I have no idea if anyone has noticed them. My two recent GF's knew I wore them and actually liked them and encouraged me to wear them. Have never changed in a locker room with them. I would if I had seen other straight guys do it. Enjoy the comfort and forget the hang up!

I have gradually switched to thongs and g-strings and they are all I wear now, so yes I wear them to the office. I am surprised that more guys don't wear them.
I am fairly conservative and tried a thong out of curiosity. I instantly liked the support and freedom, but didn't always find them comfortable and so kept on wearing boxers much of the time. I gradually got more used to thongs and also found styles which are really comfortable and made the switch and haven't worn anything else for several years now.
I have a few pairs of the Calvin Klein thongs shown above but my favourites are Hom Plume g-strings. They are really skimpy but offer great comfort and support whatever I'm doing.
There is still a bit of a taboo surrounding guys wearing thongs and it does make you a bit nervous when a woman enters your life and finds out.

I wore them exclusively for about three years. Very sexy and comfortable. They're like cowboy boots - may LOOK uncomfortable but try them and you'll see why the perception isn't reality. I accidentally left a pair in a friend's bathroom when traveling one week. Ooops. Needless to say it created quite a stir. Haven't had the desire to wear one since. This notion that they are uncomfortable or too risqué is crap. Under dress pants or jeans they are very sexy and liberating. The locker room issue is much like going a nude resort. Just how did anyone know or tell you that someone was wearing a thong, or went to a nude beach? You had to be there and look yourself. Touche!

I work in an operating room where we wear scrubs. Arguably, the thong is the best kind of underwear for scrubs wince they dont bunch. Problem is that when you are hoisting patients around on a gurney, your scrub pants can go south a little bit thereby revealing your drawers. For this reason I never wear thongs to work.
When I am working out though I always wear thongs for the simple reason that wearing boxers during intense he exercise is downright uncomfortable.
I prefer HOM thongs. They are built well and last forever. I wish I could wear them to work but the alpha male / homophobe dominated workplace makes me nervou, which is unforunate since my girlfriend wants to buy me more.
