Underwear Guy Review: Joe Snyder Mini Cheek Boxer

Designer/Manufacturer: Joe Snyder

Price: $25.00

The Brazilian cut half-back brief style has been a common option for women's underwear for some time but for men it's a fairly uncommon cut that only a few brands have come close to replicating including Rufskin and Manstore. Joe Snyder has jumped into the void with their new "Mini Cheek" boxer which is available in a wide variety of no less than 13 colors/fabrics including camo, pinstripe, sheer and solids. Almost all Joe Snyder underwear is made from a blend of 80% nylon and 20% spandex. The fabric is smooth to the touch, very stretchable, is a medium weight and has a shiny finish to it. Joe Snyder underwear generally runs true to size and this item fit well in my usual medium size.

The cut of this underwear item is difficult to categorize since it's called a "boxer" but clearly it's anything but that (no pun intended). Almost warranting a category of it's own this is a cross between a low rise brief and a thong. Because there are several aspects of the wearing experience and fit of this underwear item that are closer to a thong, I'm categorizing this review under that cut. The waistband is comprised of a 3/4" tall fully covered elastic band that is comfortable and not too tight. On the interior-back of the waistband you'll find the logo and fabric contents tags stacked on top of each other which are fairly large measuring 1 1/4" wide by 1 3/4" tall. The tags are composed of a paper-like material which feels fairly "low-rent" from a production value.

There is a center seam running down the backside which is elasticized to create a snug fit between your cheeks. As mentioned in the introduction this underwear item is very brief in back and only extends 2" down from the base of the waistband. The back fit is very much like a thong so you will want to be comfortable with the feeling of material falling between your backside from a wearing/fit perspective. The front of the garment is kept fairly minimal from a design perspective except for the signature "JS" logo which is to the left of the pouch. The pouch is single layer material and thus fairly revealing so you'll want to be comfortable with visible outlines when wearing this item. Joe Snyder is known for creating "bulge" pouch designs and this mini cheek boxer is similar with a snug pouch that lifts and shapes well but don't expect a lot of room as it is designed to fit tight. The front is extremely low rise with a deep plunging fit on the front seam which means you can expect to be baring almost all when wearing this item.

The Grades:
Fit: B+ I think it's important to note that this is intentionally a very snug fitting brief with a tight pouch and the fit/feel of a thong so expectations should be set accordingly. It's a slightly unusual wearing experience with the half-back but overall it's comfortable for general wearing conditions. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: A+ I'm giving some extra-credit here for the unique cut which isn't easy to find for men's styles and the huge array of colors including sheer and pinstripe fabrics is a nice opportunity for choice.
Material: B

Joe Snyder items are usually billed as combination underwear/swimwear use so it's a little tricky to rate the fabric purely as underwear. I would say the fabric is comfortable although not super breathable resulting in a solid B score.

Construction: A-

I encountered some errant threads on the construction but otherwise the stitching and seams were straight and the fabric edges were cut very evenly and cleanly.

Overall Grade: B+/A-

Design helps carry the score here as the fit is a little tighter in the pouch than I would like. Overall the unique cut and color options are significant pluses for this underwear item.

Would I buy another pair? This is a fun underwear item and the wide range of color options means I might pick up another one of these "boxers" from Joe Snyder in the future.

I just got a pair of these in the mail today and can't wait to try them on. Your review convinced me that I should try them out but not knowing about the sizing is always a concern. Fortunately, I am also a medium so I follow your lead on sizing and buy accordingly.

Thanks for your review of the Joe Snyder Mini Cheek. I was unaware of it and the other offerings by Joe Snyder and Manstore, which was also mentioned in your review. It's great to see the same sexy, playful cuts that have been available to women for so long being offered to men.

I purchased several "cheeky" cuts from both the Joe Snyder and Manstore line recently. The Joe Snyder Mini Cheek, Cheek Boxer, Clip Bikini and the Capri Bikini. Of the Manstore line, purchased at deadgoodundies.com, I purchased one in the style of the "micropo slip" and one in the style of the "apropo pant.

I love all of these cuts but I have to concur with you about the Joe Snyder pouch and fabric. I found the Cheek Boxer a bit too hot for this time of year and their pouches a bit too small to my liking. I'd like to see a slighly bigger pouch in these cuts as well as more breathable fabric offered. Ideally, I'd like to see a pouch, on the Clip and Capri Bikini, that's in the same style as the ones found in the N2N Tropic line. I don't know why N2N hasn't offered similar "cheeky cuts". Nevertheless, I plan on purchasing a few of the same styles from Snyder in the camouflague. I've really enjoyed each of these styles.

As for Manstore, I just got these in the mail today and the fit of both are great (plenty of room in the pouch). Both are of glittery stripperesque fabric and not very practical for daily wear but I'll be taking a closer look at the other fabrics they offer.
