Underwear Guy Review: Underthings Inset Suspender
Designer/Manufacturer: Underthings
Website: www.underthings.com
Price: $27.00
Another "alternative" gear review here (before returning to more standard fare): the Inset Suspender from Underthings. Underthings is another one of those smaller, lesser-known men's and women's undergear manufacturers who has carved out a niche by creating unique, made-to-order designs. Underthings garments are typically produced on-demand and as a result you get a very wide range of fabrics, patterns and colors to choose from for each garment order. Typical Underthings wares include standard and not so standard thongs, briefs and trunks. The not-so-typical Underthings offerings include bodygear, singlets and "suspenders". There are two versions of this particular suspender, one made from a solid color and this one which includes a second color in a "V" shape down the front pouch and thus labeled the "Inset" suspender. With this model you can choose from over two dozen spandex colors/prints for the inset piece panel and the main body. You also get a full range of back options for the design including a thong back, a half-back and what is reviewed here which is a full-back design. The spandex is a blend of 85% nylon and 15% lycra which is a a medium weight and allows for a good level of stretch. All exterior facing edges of this garment are reinforced with 1/4" elastic which helps keep things in place and prevents excessive gaping along the edges of the legs and pouch. The logo/wash/care/fabric tag is a minimal 1 1/8" wide by 1" tall anchored to the interior-back. As you can see in the detail photos the tag says "Hot Line" as the brand which is a little confusing but since Underthings claims to be the manufacturer I'm going to list them as the brand until I hear otherwise.
The two suspenders measure 1" across and run up from the back, over the shoulders and back down to the front. Sizing with a design like this is often difficult to determine but based on the guidelines on the website I went with my standard medium and that seemed to work out fairly well. The back is full coverage although the tension from the suspenders sometimes makes the back want to lift upwards a bit. The front design includes a panel-pouch design with a curved center seam to provide some room in front. Because the tension of the suspenders pulls everything upwards with a fairly snug fit, the pouch isn't necessarily the the most profile enhancing design. I'm not going to hit the score too much for the pouch engineering since I'm not sure the mix of fabric and style would really allow for a lot of shaping or lifting like standard every-day wear cotton underwear regardless of what was done. The entire suspender is single-layer spandex so there are some noticeable outlines in the front but solid colors help to keep things reasonably modest. If you went with lighter colors like white I would warn that you will want to be comfortable with more visible outlines showing.
The Grades:

Not having worn any other garments like this I'm not sure how accurate my scores will be but I felt like for the most part the fit was good. I wasn't too enthused about the way the front felt like it was flattening my profile out but it wasn't uncomfortable and the rest of the design seemed to work out well.

The broad variety of fabric colors and prints helps boost the design category score. Ultimately this is an item in its own design universe so it's all relative but I felt the inset concept worked out nicely visually and the customization options for the back let you truly design your own style.
Material:

This is all spandex fabric so not too many surprises here. The interior face is smooth to the touch with a good amount of stretch allowing for flexibility and freedom of movement.
Construction:
A
Each garment is custom-made with high-quality levels of construction that include very clean seams, nice edges on all the fabric cuts and no noticeable loose threads anywhere.
Overall Grade:
A
Since this is clearly not every-day wear the uses are more limited but what's here works out very nicely and fits well.
Would I buy another pair? If I were on the hunt for another type of item like this I would consider buying another Underthings Inset Suspender.
Wear Recommendations:
All-day Wear

Athletic
Sleepwear
Office Wear
Special Occasion
Bedroom Wear
Where To Buy:
As far as I know the only place to order this item is at Underthings.com: Product Page.
