California Muscle may sometimes seem like a niche product label especially with all their pleather bodygear but there are plenty of mainstream options to choose from as well and I thought I'd highlight one of those items: the Maximizer thong. For anyone interested in more coverage there is also a bikini brief version called the "Tempter Brief". Both versions are available in a variety of colors including a dark olive, gray and a deep magenta which is cross between a dark purple and red color. The fabric of the Maximizer thong is a blend of 90% acetate and 10% lycra which is often referred to as a "slinky" fabric. Gregg Homme and N2N Bodywear have also used this type of fabric in the past and it provides a unique feel with the acetate. Slinky fabric has a textured surface created with very fine ribbing which allows for a very

molded effect as well as yields dark, highly saturated colors that have a slight sheen to them.
The sizing for most California Muscle items
runs true-to-size and this thong fit well in my normal medium with just a slight snugness. The waistband is fully covered elastic measuring a minimal 1/4" and allows for a medium level of stretch with a fairly high level of tension. On the interior, center-back of the waist you'll find a tag that measures 1" wide by 1 1/2" tall which is made of a synthetic ribbon-like material. It's not the highest quality tag but it's small and unobtrusive.
This is a classic thong-back design with a low-rise style and about a 1 3/8" tall section of fabric (including elastic) that tapers from the top width of about 4" across down to the strap that measures about 1" across. The sides of the strap and pouch are reinforced with fully-covered 1/4" elastic which helps to keep things snug without being too tight. The tension on the strap is good with not too much or too little material. The sides of the thong are minimal, measuring 1 1/4" tall including the elastic width. Curving around to the front pouch you'll find a fairly aggressively curved center-seam design that provides room in front that also shapes your package.
The main feature that lends the "Maximizer" title to this thong is the engineered inner fabric panel with a c-ring that you pull your package through. This c-ring design is manufactured very much like the Komodo line and does a good job of providing significant lift. I can't say the c-ring is terribly easy to work into as you have to almost "stuff" yourself into the front pocket but once you are in place everything works well and feels pretty good for extended wear. The nature of the fabric panel design means that for the proper fit you'll have to use it at all times otherwise you get a lot of bunched up fabric in the front. The pouch is single-layer material which would normally be very revealing with the slinky fabric but the dark colors help disguise a lot of those outlines.
The Grades:
Fit:

Overall the fit of this thong was good with a nicely designed backstrap and a low-rise that works well for flexibility. The fit is on the snug side in terms of the legs and waist which is common for California Muscle design. I'd leave it up to you to determine your personal sizing for fit. If you like a more form-fitted feeling I would say you can go with your normal size versus something a little looser where a size up would work. I do wish the interior fabric c-ring was a little easier to maneuver into but it works well once you are in place.

I liked the fabric choice made for this thong and the cut has a sleek look. The color options are nice and they really do catch your eye with the dark colors and textured finish.

I haven't verified how well the slinky fabric is for performance/athletic wear but as an underwear item I like it's unique feel which is smooth but slightly texturized. The extra stretch from the lycra is welcome and the form fitting nature of the material is fun.
Construction:

Overall the construction of this thong appeared to be very good with clean seams, even cuts on the patterns and very clean edges on the fabric. I found just one loose thread which was very minor and easy to trim.
Overall Grade:
A
I'm pleased with this thong purchase-even at the higher price point. I feel like the extra cost is justified in the durable construction and unique fabric which makes this thong unique and visually pleasing to the eye.
Would I buy another pair? If I were interested in more engineered underwear like this I would definitely consider another pair of the California Muscle Maximizer thong. This is clearly a specialty item, probably somewhat limited in its versatility but otherwise an excellent underwear option.
