Underwear Guy Review: AussieBum Ink Mesh Brief

AussieBum has traditionally been relatively conservative with their underwear lines, only offering a token few thong and jock styles and sticking mostly to fuller-coverage brief and trunk cuts. Their swimwear line has often included more revealing and daring cuts and fabrics than the underwear line. Given those past design precedents it was a bit of a surprise to see AussieBum announce their now "Catch Of The Day" line of net-mesh underwear with its revealing large-hole mesh fabric composition. The "Ink" underwear line followed quickly afterwards offering the same mesh fabric but in a more eye-catching array of tie-dye style colors. This review covers the Ink version of the mesh brief and you should keep in mind that the two lines are fairly different since the Catch line is styled more like the "Undies" range with a functional fly and the Ink line is styled after the "Flaunt" range without a fly and a different waistband and cut.
Where you can draw the most parallels between the two mesh ranges is with the fabric which is the same for both and just supplied in different colors. The Ink color options include a bright orange with yellow highlights, a dark red with magenta highlights, and two variations of blue with light blue highlights with different color waistbands. The waistbands of this brief are very similar if not the identical microfiber elastic bands from the Flaunt line with a variety of abstract logos and bubble graphics woven into the material. The "Dye" color mesh brief I purchased had a yellow waistband with blue AussieBum text and white bubble graphics randomly places around the the entire waist. The 1 1/2" tall material is smooth on the inside and soft to the touch with a relatively firm level of tension on the stretch. I usually find AussieBum underwear to fit true to size and this brief was no exception with the mediums I ordered fitting well.
On the interior-back of the waistband you'll find the AussieBum logo patch which is flat-sewn over the waistband seam and measures 3" wide by 1 1/2" tall. The patch element is large but mostly unobtrusive when it comes to comfort. The mesh fabric itself is a blend of 82% polyester and 18% spandex with a medium level of stretch in all 4 directions. The holes in the material are about 1/8" wide so this is definitely more like a "net" fabric than a mesh. The back is full coverage with the leg-bands reinforced with substantial 3/8" fully covered elastic. The leg-band elastic has a medium-level of stretch so the fit is definitely on the "secure" side around your legs. The sides of the brief narrow to 2 3/8" tall not including the waistband. Once you make it to the front of the brief you'll note the dual-layer fabric pouch which is cut very similar if not identical to the Flaunt line. There is a reasonable amount of lift and shaping provided by the pouch design which is comfortable and falls in the "regular" room category. The net fabric is no doubt revealing although you might be a bit surprised that the double-layer mesh (especially in the Ink line colors) helps to keep some things to the imagination. For reference I did blur and darken the photos to maintain some modesty although for the most part the look is pretty close.

This brief borrows a lot from the flaunt line which I gave a positive review for so it's not surprising that I found the overall fit of this brief to be good. The cut is easy to wear and provides a nice low-rise, modern look.

I'm not actually a huge fan of mesh/net underwear but I like where AussieBum went with this design keeping the cut and waistband very traditional if not slightly conservative while letting the fabric choice speak for itself. I personally like the color options over the standard black and white so I am giving high marks for the extra colors available.

It's a little tough for me to apply my usual grading standards for this material as its very nature creates some unique wearing situations. This isn't going to be a performance fabric for obvious reasons and it's not necessarily ideal for all-day wear either but within the range of intended wearing experiences I would say this is an effective material that feels surprisingly durable and comfortable to wear.
Construction:
A+
I've rarely found any issues with AussieBum underwear and I didn't have anything negative to report with my Ink brief. The stitching was straight and the edges of the fabric were very cleanly finished.
Overall Grade:
A
As I mentioned earlier, these are specialty-wear underwear so I would recommend you purchase these with the intent of wearing them for specific occasions. In some cases you might find these work quite well for every-day, all-day wear but within the confines of "Special Occasion" I'm going with a high score of a full "A".
Would I buy another pair? By definition these are special occasion briefs so I won't likely purchase more than one pair but if I was on the market for another mesh-style brief I would definitely take another look at the AussieBum Ink line.

Another great review as always! I have to admit to being something of a traditionalist in terms of what I like from Aussiebum, with anything apart from that simple plain colour and thick waistband leaving me umming and ahhing about whether I like it or not.
I am impressed though to hear that you think that the quality of the mesh brief is so good, as you say it's a departure for Aussiebum so could easily have been something that they would falter over. Good on them for having the same high standards for this new fabric choice. Reply to this
