Not every underwear design is a 5-star winner right out the gate, often there are misses and mistakes made which result in a problematic fit or look that make it to market. When those misses happen, it's fairly common that the designer simply retires the line and moves on. It's refreshing when a designer sticks to a line and refines it over time in order to improve what might have been lacking in the first go-around of a product. Andrew Christian has been in the men's underwear business long enough that he's been able to evolve and improve many of his designs over time and thus maintain signature fabrics/lines. My first round with the iconic AC Sports Mesh brief was an uncomfortable exercise is constriction and poor fit that left me crushed and disappointed. There have been enough updates and changes to the original sports mesh brief that I figured it warranted a second look to see if the original problems had been addressed.

The basic look of this brief is still very similar to the original, with an exposed white waistband, contrast color piping, low rise cut and a mesh synthetic fabric. There are several color combinations available including the original light blue/red I tried out the first time as well as dark blue/green, yellow/red and black/yellow color combinations (main color/accent color). There are 4 other cuts from this line available including a jockstrap, trunk, gym short and long-leg basketball shorts (the last two are not classified as underwear for the most part).

There are several changes introduced with the updated Sports Mesh line that affect fit, look and feel for the better. Probably the most visible change in the design is the introduction of the signature Andrew Christian "anti-muffin top" waistband. This waistband is a much softer, stretchier version of the original version which moves and fits much better than before. The waistband is also a little more eye-catching with repeated Andrew Christian text logos repeated all the way around in high-contrast black. There are now a couple of new accent tabs added to the right-front and center-rear underneath the waistband. The tab in front is a red AC Cross logo 5/8" square and the one on the back is a yellow stripe design that also measures 5/8" square. The logo patch sewn on the center-back of the waistband is a different size and shape than the original with a width of 1 3/4" and a height of 1". The wash/care and fabric content tag is still that lower-quality paper design that measures the same 1" wide by 1 5/16" tall size. Same as before, the color-contrast piping measures 1/2" wide and accents the leg-bands and front mostly non-functional fly. The adjustable snap lift strap (originally included in all AC underwear) is no longer part of this or any other AC underwear. Probably the most important change in this brief is the new fully-shaped pouch design which leaves room up front allowing for a comfortable wearing experience. The cut of the legs is also a bit more generous leaving more freedom of movement. The pouch is still on the snug side but certainly much more wearable than the first version of this brief.

The Grades:
Fit: A- Maybe just a little more room in the pouch and I'd be going with a full "A" but otherwise this is a well-designed brief with a nice low-rise, full-coverage back and comfortable overall cut. Unlike some other AC items, the fit in back is just about right without leaving excess material and the leg-bands fit well enough to be secure but not so tight as to be uncomfortable. Pouch Fit
Regular
Design: A The color options are a lot of fun and the updated logo waistband and design tabs are welcome additions. The contrast piping is classic and sporty-lending a modern and masculine look to the garment.
Material: A-

This material is pretty much the same as before (I couldn't tell any difference despite what seems to be a change in composition). There isn't a whole lot of stretch to the fabric (thus the "snug" rating for the pouch) but it's a comfortable synthetic with a smooth finish. The look is really where the material shines, providing a unique visual treatment for a men's underwear brief.

Construction: A

Construction has improved over time with Andrew Christian underwear and this brief had cleaner seams, better stitching and cleaner edges on the fabric cuts than before. There was still some unevenness to the edges of the fabric overall but much less apparent than before.

Overall Grade: A-

This is a much improved design and I'm glad Andrew Christian kept working to refine it so we can all enjoy a sporty, modern look brief in comfort and style.

Would I buy another pair? Yes, I would consider another pair of these briefs-I already added the dark blue and green color to my collection as well as the jockstrap cut for more variety.
