As a general rule,
I've never been into novelty men's underwear. Typically, the designs are really cheesy, the materials are lacking and the fit doesn't seem to flatter or properly take into account what really works for a guy's body. I decided given the holiday season (at the time of this review) to take a gamble and try out a novelty underwear item: The Coquette Velvet Present Trunk. You'll find this item in a lot of lingerie and adult stores as well as some of the online retailers listed below. There is only one color option which is a dark green body with bright red contrast "ribbon" pieces. There are two fabric types that make up this garment with the main body green as velvet and the red "ribbon" a stretch synthetic. The fabric tag doesn't break down the two materials and only lists a Nylon/Spandex blend. The velvet has a nice, plush feel on the exterior (like velour) and the interior is a smooth finish that is comfortable. The red "trim" is a much thinner material that provides a little more stretch than the velvet. This trunk is actually fairly complicated in its construction with all the pieces cut as separate panels and sewn together into a single underwear garment. Even though there are a lot of seams, the fabric is soft enough that you can wear this trunk all-day and feel comfortable.
The back is full-coverage with a relatively low-rise on the waist overall. On the interior-back you'll find the fabric composition/wash/care and size tags which measure 1" wide by 1 1/2" tall and 1/2" square respectively. Both of the tags are fabric which lends a higher-quality feel to the design over the cheaper to produce paper style tags. The leg-bands are nicely finished and do not have any reinforcing elastic but the stretchable fabric doesn't really need it. The waistband is fully-covered and has a lot of give in it allowing for a nice, casual fit that isn't too tight and just snug enough to keep things in place. The sizing on this trunk seems to fall in the standard range with my usual medium fitting well. The front-panel construction provides a basic level of pouch although it's not necessarily the most lifting or enhancing experience. Despite the lack of too much curvature on the pouch, however, it's still very flattering and comfortable. Nothing feels pushed down or constricted up front. Of course, there isn't necessarily a huge need for too much enhancing or lift in this trunk since most of the pouch is obscured by the large red "bow" in front. Yes, it's definitely a bit cheesy but novelty is what this item is all about. The bow is secured with a strong stitch running across the front of the pouch but it doesn't affect the fit/finish to any significant degree on the inside. For those of you wondering, I would not recommend trying to remove the bow since the stitching is fairly strong and the fabric in the red stripe in front wouldn't tolerate much alteration.

I was pleasantly surprised that this trunk was engineered to fit very nicely. It's a great loungewear trunk with a fit that is very flexible and non-binding. The pouch is not super enhancing but it does provide some extra room up-front to prevent your package from being pressed down.

Is this an every-day functional underwear design? Not really, but that's not the point, the look is executed very well, the colors are surprisingly eye-catching, the materials lend a finish that could almost be termed classy (relatively speaking of course), and the "fun" factor brings something unique to the men's underwear market.
Material:
A
Velvet fits the holiday theme of the design and the material mix is very comfortable, perfect for a day or night in where this is all you're wearing. The material stretches enough that you don't feel constricted for any regular movement.
Construction:
A+
Often novelty underwear exhibits sub-par construction but this trunk had very good manufacturing quality. Despite all the complicated seams and pieces everything comes together nicely with surprisingly straight seams and clean edges across the board. There weren't any loose threads evident in my purchase and overall I would say this looks to be a durable garment.
Overall Grade:
A
The Coquette Velvet Present Trunk is a fun underwear item to wear for those unusual/special occasions where it makes sense to try something different. This isn't an every-day wear item in terms of the design but all the elements are at the quality level of being an excellent all-day multi-purpose trunk.
Would I buy another pair? By definition this isn't likely to be a multi-purchase item but I would definitely recommend it to others looking for a holiday-themed underwear item.
