Underwear Guy Review: Undergear Cotton Rib Thong
Designer/Manufacturer: Undergear
Website: www.undergear.com
Price: $14.00
Undergear is always changing and updating their house brand underwear so it's a challenge to keep up sometimes. I like to pick items that seem like they've been around for a while and the ribbed underwear line is one of their longer-lived lines. Introduced back in the 90s, the ribbed line is available in a couple of other cuts besides this "athletic" thong including a jockstrap and sport brief. The colors have varied a lot over time but right now you can find this item in gold (yellow), army (olive), black, burgundy and my purchase: denim (blue). All items in this range include white contrast piping and a white elastic waistband with black "Undergear" text repeated around. The rib of the material is wide, measuring approximately 1/8". The fabric itself is surprisingly light-weight and thin with a medium amount of stretch. The waistband is a classic exposed elastic material with a minimal amount of surface treatment on the inside. There are two labels on the interior-back of this thong including a logo patch that is 1 3/4" wide by 1/2" tall and a wash/care fabric tag that measures 1" wide by 1 1/8" tall.
The back/strap style of this thong is a classic design that starts at about 6" across at the top of the waist and tapers down to 7/8" at the narrows point of the strap. There is a section of fabric that extends below the elastic band all the way around the waist so the ribbed material and white piping maintains a visual continuity. Probably my favorite aspect of this thong is the white piping that measures 3/8" wide. It's a little hard to tell but I do not believe the contrast piping covers any reinforcing elastic. Like many of Undergear's in-house items sizing on the ribbed line runs a full-size large in my experience. I ordered a small and that fit within my usual medium range well although the rise was still much too high for my tastes.
The pouch on this thong is roomy with a center-seam design that provides a medium-level of lift and shaping. The single-layer pouch is a bit thin and feels less durable than I might like normally for cotton fabric.

The Grades:
Fit:
C+
The rise on this thong is a lot higher than you normally experience and the overall fit seems to be cut quite generously -even after sizing down. Overall the fit is decently comfortable and wearable for a full day.
Pouch Fit
Design:
B+
The exposed elastic waistband could use some modernization of materials and design but the ribbed fabric, color options and athletic-inspired contrast piping helps step up the design score.
Material:
C
This cotton feels a little thin and not as durable as I'd like. I think I'd feel differently about the material if it were doubled-up in the pouch but since that's not the case I would have liked something a little more substantial.
Construction:
A
Undergear has improved their manufacturing quality significantly over time and this thong had excellent stitching and finishing on the seams as well as very good fabric edges along the waistband.
Overall Grade:
C+
This is a decent thong option for men, particularly if you like some extra room and the styling that this design provides, but it's not going to receive my highest score obviously.
Would I buy another pair? This was a decent trial for myself, but I don't think I'll be purchasing any more of these thongs, I like a little more lift in the pouch and a lower rise on the waist with a refactored fabric option.

I bought 2 of these, one red and one blue, and my valuation after 4 or 5 wears of both is "mehhh." They are both mediums, but the blue appears to have lost its shape, it has stretched in an odd way, and I find myself having to deal with an alarmingly loose strap at times and the "spillage" and loss of support that comes with it. The red has kept its shape and size. Very strange. Based on the red, I might buy another; on the blue? no chance. Overall, not a garment I'll be buying again, mainly due to this inconsistency. Oh yes, definitely size down... I'm a 35 waist, and normally wear a large in other brands: it's annoying that I'm having problems with slack in a medium. Reply to this
