COVERED ELASTIC WAISTBAND
You’ll find covered elastic waistbands on almost every style of underwear from department store brands to high-end designer labels. Traditionally, you’ll find the construction consists of a standard elastic of varying widths from 1/4” to a full 1” that is wrapped by fabric and sewn to the main body of the garment. Covered elastic waistbands generally have the benefit of greater comfort with less friction from the rougher elastic material being buffered by the covering fabric.
Most often (but not always) the fabric that covers the waistband is the same material as the rest of the brief resulting in a streamlined look which is ideal for colors and patterns. The one downside to this type of waistband is that the fabric covering the elastic can wear out over time but outside of poorly manufactured items by the time this happens the rest of the brief is also due for replacement as well.
Pros: Comfortable fit, integrated design options, variety of heights and strengths available, typically adds less to the cost of the item and good at resisting rolling,
Cons: Fabric can wear and fray at the edges of the elastic and not as useful for displaying iconic logos under low rise jeans.
