INTRODUCTION

Man in Underwear undressing for laundry
"...we spend the vast majority of our time hiding our underwear underneath clothing and thus never revealing our decisions..."
Underwear is such a great fashion item since it comes in all sorts of varieties, looks, cuts, materials and sizes. The irony is that despite all those options, we spend the vast majority of our time hiding our underwear underneath clothing and thus never revealing our decisions about an important item of clothing. For most people, the only time we come even close to wearing something like underwear in public is when we are at the beach or a pool where most men wear long board shorts or swim trunks (an analog to boxers) and a brave few wear "Speedos" -more correctly referred to as swim briefs. Societal norms and customs constantly evolve with a pendulum that can swing wildly from the conservative to the more open-minded. I would say currently there have been some gains with a little more awareness and confidence in showing our underwear and undergear more openly but it's still a rarity mostly chosen for comedic affect and not for it's ability to emphasize the male sexuality, spirit of adventure or the personality of the wearer.

I had always felt that there some of the most interesting images I had seen were the few I had seen that used underwear as an integrated element of an image that also challenged what we thought of "appropriate" usage for the item that is traditionally hidden from view. Most commonly underwear is relegated to a "binary" of either being an item that works as a functional necessity or an erotically-charged object that enhances desirability. In either case, the image of the male in underwear is usually conceptualized for the purpose of marketing and sales of a product so the commercial intent is frequently at the forefront.

INSPIRATION

I think it's fun to use underwear as a way to communicate character, emotion and/or spirit of the wearer or the photographer. Jockey Underwear did a series of advertisements in the late 90s that showed a variety of different archetypal professionals with part of their uniforms on and the other part taken off in order to feature the underwear styles they were wearing. Of course I had no idea at the time how the combination of the key artifacts of each profession combined with the image of the underwear would be a central inspiration for my future creative explorations.

With the re-launch of the site I knew I wanted to do some things differently and cover a broader range of topics and ideas about fashion, art, creativity, underwear and culture. In-between the years of my original site and what you see here now I had started to explore self photography (before the term "selifie" had become so popularized) but I quickly realized I wasn't interested in being limited to traditional cellphone mirror photos (as much fun as those can be!). Obviously I have a strong interest in underwear but I've always wanted to combine it with a creative expression that conveyed a variety of personas, characters and ideas that could be fun, funny and interesting. I took some time to better educate myself on the history and world of creative photography. As I have reviewed the genre of creative male photography I was drawn towards the more fantastical interpretations by the creative minds of James Bidgood, Pierre & Gilles and the Exterface Studio. As an independent artist and prolific self-photographer Peter Berlin also captures my imagination.

The works of these artists are often extremely visual, bright and intentionally ironic while also being erotic and sexual at the same time. Their subjects often focus on male archetypes and intersect the worlds of sexuality, statement, fashion and social commentary. Observing how these artists have developed entire characters and worlds with their photography -often featuring underwear or undergear of one type or another- I was inspired to try my own hand at expressing my concepts visually.

MY OWN EXPLORATIONS

Originally I started with simple ideas that involved just adding an extra accessory here or there which provided an extra edge or "flavor" to a photo. After realizing I had ideas that were more elaborate, I started coming up with ever-increasingly complex visions for full costumes that used underwear as a central element but included accessories, makeup, masks and props.

"My primary themes have trended towards superheros and traditional male archetypes..."
Besides the creative process of coming up with ideas and gathering inspiration for each photo composition, it's also a lot of fun to source and discover each matching element that makes up the overall theme. Discovering obscure underwear designs, materials and manufacturers is always a bit of a thrill and can inspire an "ah ha!" moment that takes something to that next level. It's been a learning process with mixed results.

Some photos and concepts turn out better than others and sometimes I'm surprised at which ones become more popular over others. My primary themes have trended towards superheros and traditional male archetypes but occasionally I'll go on a tangent and paint myself up like a Zebra, that's the fun to be had in the creative process inspiration strikes and you execute.

My goal is for bold imagery and themes (subtle is not my game) so I have fun going for more extreme and exaggerated visuals. I have no delusions of significance to attribute to my work other than to have fun with underwear and my creative energy. If I can make anyone else smile, laugh or even just do a double-take and ask a question I figure I've done what I set out to do.

I hope you have fun viewing these images that I've generated over the years and maybe you'll be inspired to create your own Underwear Costume! You can click through on each image to view a larger version as well as red up on my thoughts about the given idea or theme and of course, some information about the underwear I'm wearing in each composition.
