SUMMARY

PRODUCT INFORMATION:

Suggested retail price: $16.00
Line Name: Billy
Available Sizes: S->XXL

Although popular and well-known for their daring swimwear designs offered in brief and low rise brief styles, Aussiebum hasn't ventured too often into the world of mini/bikini brief styles for men. I was pleased to see the Australian brand add a new line in their underwear range that fills that gap with the new Billy brief. The Billy line is one of the more recent additions to the Aussiebum world and it's a solid performing brief that hits some nice design highlights.

TOP FAVORITE ASPECT

The available colors and prints are probably my favorite aspect with the mix of retro, modern and fun options likely to please any guy's sensibilities.

The fabric is pretty good but I think something with a little softer finish would have been nice.

MATERIAL

I should note up front that it appears Aussiebum made some changes to the fabric in the Billy line after the initial release. You'll note that the ocean scene print version that I'm featuring here is no longer sold even though it was introduced just a few months ago. Based on the fact that the Aussiebum website now lists a 90% cotton 10% spandex blend while my brief has a 95% cotton 5% spandex blend, I can only assume some modifications were made to the material choice not long after the Billy line was launched. To add even more confusion to the mix FreshPair's website lists their version of the Billy Brief as having a 92% cotton 8% spandex blend. I'm going to base my review of what I have on-hand although I'll try to make some accomodation for what I assume is a little more stretch in the versions sold now. At some point I will probably order one of the newer releases and update this review accordingly if things feel noticeably different.

Whenever ink is applied to a fabric there is going to be some alteration of the finish and that is noticeable on my version of the brief. The surface has a barely noticeable hint of the texture of the ink that's left on the cotton but it is very subtle and I'm sure will go away after a few wash and wear cycles.

The fabric itself is not terribly stretchable, I would have preferred a little more overall "give" which might be why they changed it in later releases. It's not uncomfortable by any means and still does a nice job of retaining shape after wearing. The material is surprisingly light weight and I can imagine without the print would be just slightly see-through.

FIT

The overall fit of this brief is fairly nice with a substantially low rise all-around the waist. The back is perhaps just shy of full coverage depending on how sculpted your backside is. The front pouch is made from two shaped panels with a seam in front that helps prevent your package from being overly flattened. Although a fairly simple design the front pouch does a better than average job of giving you some lift and shape up front which is flattering and pleasing to the eye. I found the pouch is a just bit on the snug side and may not leave as much room up front as some other Aussiebum underwear designs but I like that there's an option in the underwear range they offer that caters to guys who might like a snugger fit in front.

The overall sizing is mostly true-to-size although I would say that depending on your build this brief is just a bit smaller than the typical range. By my best estimate these briefs run about 1/4 size smaller than you might typically find which I realize is a tough measurement to quantify. Just be careful if you find yourself falling on the upper end of the stated size ranges and consider a size up if you like a looser fit.

DESIGN & STYLE

Some might say it's hard to infuse a lot of design into the Mini/Bikini brief style but I've always believed a smart designer will find a way. Aussiebum does just that through three notable features of the Billy brief.

The first design touch is of course the color and exclusive prints offered in the range which offer a great variety of choices for guys from the masculine grays and camos to the fun purple and retro video game print. No matter what your personality dictates, you'll have an option in the Billy range.

The second most noticeable design flair on this brief is the small Aussiebum tag that has been wrapped around the right-front of the waistband. The contrast black and white tag adds a nice visual element to the brief while not distracting from the overall look.

The last significant design element I'd like to call out is the printed wash/care information on the inside-back of the brief which is accomplished with a high-quality and durable silver ink that makes for a tagless, unobtrusive and functional method to include the prerequisite information on the underwear item.

As noted in the earlier part of my review the light-weight fabric doesn't leave a lot to the imagination -especially in any of the lighter colors- so do keep that in mind when matching these up with your style personality.

I should note that I think the pricing on these briefs is quite good for a premium underwear line and Aussiebum found a very reasonable price-point at roughly $16 per pair that doesn't break the bank.

CONSTRUCTION & CARE

I have yet to encounter a "miss" with Aussiebum on quality and construction and my Billy briefs were another solid performer with clean seams, no errant threads and an even cut on the patterns. The print applications appear very clean and the colors are vibrant and eye pleasing. I have a pair of the solid-color briefs as well and the dye color treatment is even and nicely saturated.

My assessment of durability is that these will hold up well but due to the thinness of the fabric I would put a bit of care into washing these and not necessarily mixing them in with lots of rough items like denim with zippers and buttons. Other than that small note I would say regular machine washing and drying is ok and you won't have to "fuss" too much over these briefs.
