MATERIAL

Rufskin employs a variety of fabrics in their underwear and sports gear lines with this Virgo bikini brief making use of a thin and soft blend of ryan and spandex. The fabric has a nice feel to it on both sides that is well-suited for underwear. The finish is very soft to the touch and comfortable for all-day wear.

The thinness of the material lends itself to warmer temperatures or any time you want to stay cool but is still opaque enough that you won't be revealing too much visually (genital lines, however, will definitely show through).

Despite the 5% spandex blend I found the stretch limits of this fabric to be surprisingly limited in the vertical direction but ample on the horizontal. This is due to the way the fabric has been woven and cut and is fairly typical for men's underwear designs.

There are several colors available with corresponding contrast-color piping on the edges. The hue and saturation of all the colors is very even and vibrant with a high-quality look to all of the options. The colors available in the Virgo line are refreshed on a regular basis so you may find different colors available from past seasons still being sold online.

FIT

I've had mixed experiences in terms of fit for a lot of Rufskin items over the past decade or so that I've been buying their gear. Back in the day Rufskin items always ran a full size small and the pouches were usually very tight. Things seem to have changed over time though since I bought this bikini brief in both a large and a medium and found that they seem to have adjusted their designs to now fall within North American standard ranges. The medium version of this brief fit surprisingly loose on the waistband accommodating almost up to a 35" with the stretch. I would say the waistband felt a bit loose and not the most secure while wearing which is a little disconcerting considering this is already a very low-rise design. Conversely the leg-bands that are reinforced with elastic are not the most forgiving and actually have a lot less stretch allowed. My legs are quite muscular and thankfully, despite the lack of stretch the leg-bands were not an issue for fit and felt comfortable and helped keep the pouch secure as well. Although the waistband is loose I wouldn't suggest ordering a size down as I think that would make the legs too tight for most guys.

While on the topic of the waistband and leg-bands I couldn't help but notice that the execution of the seams on both was handled in a slightly unusual manner that ultimately affected the fit and feel of this brief. Usually when you have a bikini brief like this there are two side seams which separate the front and back pattern pieces. This side seam runs all the way up the brief and includes a join for the elastic waistband. Typically the fabric is seamed to create a tunnel where the elastic runs as one continuous piece through the side. Rufskin's design doesn't create a tunnel for the elastic and instead it appears the elastic is cut and folded over with the rest of the fabric. This approach results in a very thick mass of fabric and elastic being created along the side seams which adds extra roughness along the waist. I can't really see any functional need to utilize this approach on the waistband and ultimately it seems more like a cost-cutting move rather than one that improves the fit or design.

This is a classic men's bikini brief design which means there is no contoured or seamed pouch in front, just a flat design that is meant to shape around your genitals to create a package. This approach can lead to a slightly constricting feel as your penis and balls are pushed back a bit by the material. As a consequence you shouldn't expect any sort of lift or enhancement as you wear this brief and in fact it's likely to make your bulge less pronounced than other underwear (not always a negative thing). I think my issue with the design is that because the waistband is so loose -as your package naturally pushes the material outward- the waist tends to fall down more so as a result. This tends to contribute to the feeling that things just aren't "secure" around the waistband and can lead to the brief riding down when wearing.

The back of this brief is just short of full coverage with nearly all of your curves covered unless you're one of the more gifted guys in back. The paper tag in back is narrow enough that I didn't notice it creating any negative impact on the wearing experience although fabric is generally nicer than paper as a material option for tags.

I realize I've made quite a few comments about the fit that sound like detractors but when talking about the overall wearing experience I would say these are still comfortable bikini briefs. The waistband fit aside, I enjoyed the effortless feel of the flat front and back design which provides a smooth, seamless wearing experience that is unobtrusive and light. Having said that, I have a hard time giving much higher than a "B-" on the final grade since there were more than a few misses on this brief that feel like they could have been fixed in the design at this high-end price point.

DESIGN & STYLE

As I mentioned in the Material section of the review there is a nice range of colors to choose from with each option on the primary color paired with a pleasant secondary color that shows up on the waistband and leg-bands. RUfskin swaps out the color options year to year with the currently produced colors including a vibrant turquoise and magenta as well as a more subdued light purple. I'm a fan of options and it's always great to see bright colors as well as standard black and white made available in an underwear design.

The other very visible design element on this bikini brief is the iconic Rufskin Logo patch that is a woven fabric and stitched flat against the right-front of the brief. I have to say as much as I like the eye-catching visual of the logo patch the quality of execution is lacking significantly with very haphazard stitching and somewhat crooked edges on the patch itself. It's a nice design element marred by poor execution.

I talked a little bit about the paper tags on the interior-back of this brief and I think you know that I'm not a fan of this kind of execution. Fabric tags always feel more premium and paper is just not as nice to look at or feel.

"premium" value range still seemed reasonable. In 2015 the price has jumped to $28 per pair with no upgrade in quality which I think is really pushing it for the minimalist nature of this brief. You can still find online stores selling this brief at the $21 price point but I'm not sure how long that will last.

The Style Personality of this brief is at the cusp of the bridge between "Confident" and "Daring" in my opinion as the fabric in the single-layer front pouch is quite thin and this reveals quite pronounced and visible penis and ball outlines. No one will have to guess as to the dimensions of your penis or balls when they see you in these but at the same time everything is still covered. The low-rise nature of the Virgo Bikini Brief combined with the loose elastic waistband means you'll probably be showing your pubic hair (assuming you don't shave everything smooth) and the upper part of your butt cheeks which is also upping the "daring" factor of this item.

Given the revealing nature of this brief I'd say it's most appropriate for lounging around the house, and nights out.

If I were to evaluate the design elements just by intent and not by execution or price I'd probably end up with a fairly high score here. When I take into account the final result which isn't as crisply executed as I'd like and the increased price point I think the grade ends up being lowered down to a solid if not stellar "B".

CONSTRUCTION & CARE

Rufskin manufacturing quality is usually very good and I found this Virgo Bikini Brief matched my expectations in terms of the accuracy of the stitching. All the seams and reinforced elastic binding were finished with expertly straight sewing and crisp fabric edges. I couldn't find any loose threads on any part of this brief. As I mentioned in the design section, the only part of this brief that wasn't perfectly sewn was the logo patch which was pretty rough in terms of quality.

The durability of this brief is somewhere on the lower end of what you'd expect for men's underwear. I've owned three pairs of these Virgo briefs and I had the unfortunate experience of one of them ripping open with a hole on the side after just 1 wearing cycles. I am going to assume this fragility is due to the very thin nature of the fabric which can degrade easily if you don't take extra care when handling them. The instructions say you can machine wash these briefs but only air dry them. This means you'll have to take extra steps when washing these if you want them to last longer.

Rufskin could have a hit with their Virgo bikini as it's a nice design with some sexy flare but execution and fit really bring down the final score.
