Suggested retail price: $33.00 - $45.00

Although Tommy Hilfiger has historically held good brand and name recognition for apparel, the company has never endeavored to take on the underwear market with the same level of aggression as Calvin Klein has. As a consequence you'll find just a small range of men's underwear options that sport the iconic Tommy Hilfiger logo. In this review I'm taking a closer look at the affordable option of the Tommy hip briefs available in a 5-pack at many retailers online and offline.

TOP FAVORITE ASPECT

I was very impressed with the fabric and loved how soft and surprisingly flexible the fabric was despite being 100% cotton.

LEAST FAVORITE ASPECT

The fit in back is not ideal and negatively affected my score of this brief more than any other aspect.

MATERIAL

100% cotton can be a tricky fabric choice given the benefits of adding just a small amount of spandex normally provides underwear material. The quality control and weave of the cotton fibers can make or break the wearability and utility of cotton fabric leaving it either decently movable and soft or rough and stiff. Luckily Tommy Hilfiger went with a higher quality cotton fabric that has a weave that allows a decent amount of stretch along the horizontal direction (very little on the vertical, however). The fabric has a surprisingly soft feel to the surface which is a significant "win" given 100% cotton often feels rough.

The material is medium weight, perhaps just slightly on the thicker side than you might find in other underwear cotton fabrics but just barely so.

I can't identify any specific performance qualities in this material so there's nothing special to call out in the "features" section.

FIT

I haven't tried any Tommy Hilfiger underwear before this brief so it was an interesting first-time wearing experience. The front is a dual-layer flat-front design with a seam applied to the base which forms a basic pouch. Without a structured and carefully designed pouch you'll find very little lift or enhancement of your package is rewarded by wearing these briefs. Although lacking any enhancement effect the pouch is still very comfortable with a nice amount of room without being excessive so you get a good balance of support without constriction.

The fabric-covered elastic on the leg-bands provides an excellent amount of comfort and I really liked the amount of give on the elastic which helped the fit for a guy with more muscular legs like mine. You should still enjoy the leg-band size if your thighs are more standard in size since there's a good amount of range and tension in the elastic.

The waistband is comfortable and secure but similar to the leg-bands has an extra amount of stretch that prevents any unsightly "muffin-top" appearance. The rise of this brief is about medium, some would say low-rise but my definition of low rise is probably more extreme than others.

The one area where this brief disappointed me on the fit category was the back. The seat is full coverage and cut quite generously to a degree that even a guy with a better than average butt found some of the fabric sagging in a less than flattering manner. An overly generous cut on the backside seems to be problem that plagues department store underwear and even designer-label multi-packs like this one.

The overall size of this brief runs true-to-size and I'd recommend you order whatever size you normally do. The mediums I purchased fit pretty well overall minus the unfortunate issues I found with the back. If it hadn't been for that excessive cut that caused the sagging in the rear I'd probably have gone with a A- score but as it stands now I have to lower the final grade to a solid but not perfect B+ fit.

DESIGN & STYLE

Multi-pack underwear doesn't often garner any big "wins" for the design and style category although sometimes I find a few exceptions. These Tommy briefs have a few points to them that help them rise above the average score.

One thing I always like is an option for color. We all know black, white and gray are good every-day staple colors to have in your underwear drawer but being able to choose from other options that include real colors is a big plus in my book. I did a little research shopping online and it seems like there are quite a few different color combinations you can buy these Tommy briefs in. There are red, orange, blue and green colors available to liven up the austere blacks and whites.

Beyond color options the other significant design choice added to these briefs is the iconic Tommy Flag logo patch which is sewn flat to the center-front of the waistband on these briefs. The logo is a nice woven material that will hold up over time and adds a nice "break" to this otherwise very plain brief.

The wash/care, manufacturer and size information is printed flat on the inside-back of this brief which has the advantage of removing any possible irritation from a tag. The downside to this flat printing technique is that it can cause a certain amount of "rippling" of the fabric because the ink fuses to the fibers of the cotton and prevents it from moving or stretching. Usually this isn't too much of an issue but in this case there's a *lot* of text going on so the affected area is quite large.

The fit and design of these briefs lends them well for all-day wear as well as office work. I am adding them to the lounge and sleepwear categories as well which I don't normally do but I was pleased enough with the fabric and fit that I think these are surprisingly versatile briefs.

From a style "personality" perspective I usually say this kind of brief is "modest" given the thicker nature of the fabric and the dual-layer pouch which will generally obscure your more noticeable lines. Interestingly enough I'm going with a "confident" rating because you can expect people to be able to make out all your overall dimensions since the completely flat design of the pouch tends to create a "molding" affect on your penis and balls and subsequently gives a fairly visible show.

The pricing on these multi-packs is higher than typical department store levels but I've found these briefs at discount stores like Ross and Marshall's as well so you may get a better deal. At the MSRP of $45 that comes to $9/pair which is a very reasonable price.

CONSTRUCTION & CARE

One area where this brief truly shines is the quality of construction. Every single stitch and seam is expertly sewn with not one errant thread or crooked line to be found. The waistband is secured with triple stitching that feels very durable and long-lasting. At this price point I usually expect to see some corners being cut on manufacturing consistency but I am pleased to say my multi-pack was spot-on with the same good construction to be found across the entire set. Fit and size were also consistent within the package of briefs which has plagued other brands that I've tried.

Wash and care is not surprisingly fairly straight forward, standard detergent, machine wash and dry all apply here. Bleach won't work on any of the color of course and even in the case of the white versions keep in mind you'll be bleaching the color of the Tommy logo if you're not careful.
