SUMMARY

PRODUCT INFORMATION:

Suggested retail price: $24.50 (includes matching T-Shirt)
Line Name: Underoos for Men
Available Sizes: S->XL

It's rare that a men's underwear item goes viral these days but the reissue of Underoos for adults managed to do that when they relaunched in 2014. Back in the late 70s Fruit Of The Loom had the genius idea of taking several popular kids cartoon licenses and creating matching T-shirt and underwear sets to market to kids. These sets were sold to both boys and girls as a fun way to dress up as their favorite characters from popular culture movies and shows like Star Wars, GI Joe, Transformers, DC Comics and Marvel Comics to name a few. The product was taken off the market after a few successful years until FTL sold the rights for the Underoos brand to a global merchandising company names Bioware Merchandising. Bioware then proceeded to create reissue versions of the most popular licensed designs but this time for adults that would have grown up since the 80s.

The choice to make the reissue Underoos for adults hit at just the right time as 80s nostalgia has been booming. The first few manufactured runs of Underoos sold out quickly in the official Hot Topic stores and could only be found on the secondary market like eBay. Bioware ramped up production in 2015 and introduced several new character sets which are still sold exclusively through HotTopic stores (both physical locations and online at HotTopic.com). Just like before, Underoos are sold as a boxed set with a matching T-Shirt and Brief. This review will focus on the brief but I'll mention a few elements of the T-Shirt along the way as well.

TOP FAVORITE ASPECT

The licensed character designs are incredibly fun and bring something genuinely different to the men's underwear marketplace.
-

LEAST FAVORITE ASPECT

The low price point clearly drove the manufacturer to cut corners in order to deliver these licensed garments to consumers so the durability and construction quality scores negatively impact the overall score quite a bit.

MATERIAL

The brief is made from a 95% cotton 5% spandex blend which displayed a surprising amount of stretch. The surface is fairly soft to the touch which is nice for an underwear item. The T-Shirt is made of 100% cotton so it doesn't have as much stretch in it but the surface feels comparable to the brief in terms of softness and wearability.

The fabric is fairly light-weight but still opaque enough that you won't be showing anything through the double-layer front or single layer back.

The colors of the item are driven by the specific character/license so depending on what set you buy you may get any color ranging from orange for the Star Wars Rebel Pilot to Purple for the Skeletor set. The colors are vibrant and evenly saturated across the material surface for both the T-Shirt and brief.

The exposed waistband is offered in contrasting colors that match the character theme. The material is a functional if somewhat no-frills microfiber elastic that feels smooth to the touch and is the same on both exterior and interior faces.

FIT

This is an old-school brief which means you shouldn't expect any special lift/separate engineering in the pouch or other modern innovations. To be fair advanced engineering isn't the point of these briefs and what they do deliver is a perfectly comfortable wearing experience that works well for all-day wear.

The rise is closer to full-rise than most modern designer men's briefs with the waistband maintaining a suitable amount of tension to keep things secure but not too tight. The leg-bands are reinforced with elastic but I couldn't help but feel that they were a little flimsy when wearing and might cause unsightly gaps along the pouch over longer wearing and washing cycles.

The back is slightly above full coverage with ample room to cover your cheeks. I didn't find the back coverage to be too much but I can imagine some guys might find the fabric cut just a hair bit too generously and could cause some sagging depending on how curvy or flat your butt may be.

As I mentioned earlier there isn't anything special about the front part of this brief. It's a standard functional fly with double-layer fabric that does the job of keeping everything comfortable if not particularly lifted or otherwise enhanced. Due to the extra stretch in the material I'd say the pouch can work well for a pretty broad range of guys.

Overall sizing on these briefs runs true-to-size with the North American standard 32-34 inch waist matching the medium on the underwear well.

The T-Shirt is cut closer to an athletic fit than loose and seems to be designed for good all-day wear.

DESIGN & STYLE

I think it's pretty clear when you're buying adult Underoos you are expecting a hit of 80s nostalgia which means you are looking for the classic look of an exposed elastic waistband and classic fly-front brief pattern. Based on those criteria the reissue Underoos briefs hit the mark with the wide contrast-color waistband that coordinates nicely with the bright, fun colors exhibited on the main body of the briefs.

The functional front fly has that old-school charm with a modest sensibility in the pouch that doesn't intend to lift or enhance your package by any means but still provides a comfortable wearing experience. The Style Personality of this brief falls solidly in the "Modest" category with little to no skin reveal and an intentionally conservative full coverage front and back. The only thing that makes this design not fall into the "Conservative" category is the fact that the material is quite thin and there will still be a bit of outlines showing even in the double-layer front.

The large printed logo and wash/care design on the interior-back is fun in a retro way although I do not necessarily like the amount of space the treatment takes up. The printed ink binds to the material and does restrict the stretch in that area just slightly although it's not significant enough to negatively impact the fit/feel in back.

I can see wearing these briefs as mostly a fun Lounging and Sleepwear item although there's nothing really preventing you from wearing them as All-Day wear either. They seem a bit too playful for typical Office wear and not quite stylish enough for a Night Out.

As far as Value that's a little tough to separate out the brief from the T-Shirt since you can't buy them separately I'll consider the retail price as a combination. A licensed design that includes both a brief and T-Shirt with nice boxed packaging seems like a steal at $24.50 so I'm placing this solidly in the "Affordable" category. Considering you can often find these sets available on sale you might even consider these "Thrifty" depending on how much of a discount you find them for.

CONSTRUCTION & CARE

So far the scores across the categories have been pretty solid with nothing less than a "B" level grade. Unfortunately the Underoos briefs couldn't make it through the review gauntlet without taking a big hit in the Construction & Care category. The big downside to that affordable pricing is clearly the quality control at the point of manufacture. It was pretty clear right away that the sewing on the brief wasn't the best I've seen with more than one area of rarely seen puckering along the waistband where the tension was not held evenly during sewing.

The finishing of the fabric edges wasn't terrible but it's clear there is a roughness and lack of care in how the edges were cut on the pattern.

Lots of loose threads and in some cases jammed threads in the seams didn't project an air of quality either. Probably the worst offense of all the issues I had was the fact that right out of the box my brief had a noticeable hole in the back. This is an inexcusable quality control miss and something I've almost never seen on modern underwear (even "cheap" underwear). I can only hope my situation was a rare exception and not a common defect across the line. The T-Shirt had some of the same construction issues but they were fewer and less noticeable.

As far as care these are pretty standard briefs with machine washing and machine drying considered safe operations. I think you can expect fading and some degrading of the material over time using standard washing cycles but that's not surprising with a more affordable item that doesn't use exotic fabrics.
