SUMMARY

PRODUCT INFORMATION:

Suggested retail price: $24.00 (5-pack)
Line Name: Premium Cotton
Available Sizes: S->XL

The U.S. Polo Association low rise brief 5-pack seems to be a nearly ubiquitous underwear item stocked at nearly every discount clothing retailer I've visited from TJMaxx, Marshalls to Ross, you'll find these affordable men's underwear option available for $10 or less. If, for some reason you like to spend more money than you should, you can always opt to pay full retail price for these at a nearby Sears store but I wouldn't recommend that option given how often these show up on discount. It should be noted that despite the name, this brand is not associated with Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation.

TOP FAVORITE ASPECT

The price is probably the best redeeming quality of these briefs although the variety of colors comes in a close second.

LEAST FAVORITE ASPECT

The fit could be a bit more flattering to the male package but for the most part these were a very good multi-pack of affordable underwear.

MATERIAL

These briefs are offered in a 5-pack made from 100% cotton. The material is woven in such a way that there is medium stretch on the horizontal but almost no stretch on the vertical. The fabric is medium weight and not see-through against the skin although when put up against a back light you can see through the fabric much like most fabrics of this type.

Thankfully the cotton is quite soft to the touch and feels nicer than many other 100% cotton underwear that I've tried out before. The surface is matte with just a hint of a slightly vintage wash texture. Interestingly enough there are two different logo application methods employed on the fabric depending on which version you look at. The solid color briefs have a single logo on the right-front which feels like a vinyl material that has been heat-sealed to the surface. The all-over print version of the brief has logos that almost feel like ink printed directly into the material which is less noticeable on the surface texture.

I'd say this fabric utilized in this underwear makes for a decent wearing experience and earns a solid B score suitable for an affordable underwear item.

FIT

I went with my normal medium size and these briefs felt like they fit true-to-size with a secure fit on the waist even though there was a lot of generous give. The elastic reinforced leg bands felt comfortable and supportive without being too tight -even for my more muscular thighs so that was a nice bonus.

The waistband is covered elastic and it provides a nice comfortable fit that doesn't dig in unnecessarily on your sides. The box designates these as low rise and I'd say that is accurate as far as where the waist tends to land.

The back is a full cut but thankfully not so generous as to cause sagging or awkward bunching as can often be the case with lower-cost multi-pack briefs.

A nice design feature that isn't always included in multi-pack underwear is a pouch made from a a double-front fabric panel with a bit of contouring. The pouch is cut fairly standard in terms of room up front and I would not say there is much to provide any specific lift or enhancement. Your package won't necessarily seem overly impressive when wearing these briefs but at the same time you won't feel compressed or restricted by the design which is a big plus.

DESIGN & STYLE

Like most multi-pack underwear the design and style score is derived almost entirely from the color options available. Since these packs of underwear have been around for a very long time it's not clear to me what are the most current color selections but a little bit of research has indicated a broad variety of colors are available as well as some stripes and logo print versions mixed in. In most cases the colors are more subdued colors which lend a more mature and understated masculine feel to the design.

All the solid briefs have an additional Polo logo placed on the right-front hip area that provides a nice graphical touch to an otherwise unadorned design. As noted earlier in the review this logo is a different treatment from the version that appears in the printed fabric version with a smoother, more plastic-like feel to it (still very subtle to the touch).

The label in back is handled as a flat print with a repeat of the ubiquitous logo as well as the standard size and wash/care information. I like that the designers kept the printed information to a minimum and just included the basics.

Although low-rise I would not call this a particularly revealing pair of underwear. The double-front pouch prevents any of the more noticeable outlines you might show off otherwise. I'd say this falls into the "modest" level of underwear personality which is good for all-day wear and function.

Speaking of all-day wear I'd say the applicable uses for these briefs are fairly standard without any particular fabric or design elements lending an edge for other activities than normal daily wear in and out of the office.

Given that you can frequently purchase these low rise briefs as a 5-pack in discount stores you're talking about potentially less than $2 per brief which puts these squarely in the "thrifty" category. Given the decent wearing experience I'd say these are quite a steal for a quick and easy underwear option that can save you a lot of money if you don't need anything particularly special in the design or fit department.

CONSTRUCTION & CARE

Not surprisingly there are a few construction misses in these briefs which is typical with a mass-market affordable underwear option. I noticed some messy thread handling on the seams which could have been executed a bit better. Not all the seams were perfectly straight either but not outside tolerances that you'd find noticeable without close inspection.

Given that these are 100% cotton you can wash them in a normal washing machine without too much concern about durability. You'd never want to buy a 5-pack of underwear and have to worry about delicate care so I'd say regular detergent should be fine. You can expect some of the colors to fade a bit but otherwise I'd say these briefs are constructed to last about the average lifespan of any regular pair of men's underwear without taking excessive steps to treat them lightly.
